For what it's worth I switched from AVG to the free Avast version about a year ago and I have been very happy with it. It is powerful and does the job it is supposed to without being 'bloatware'. It has saved my butt several times during that period as it found viruses in downloads before they were even unpacked. The registration for the free version lasts for 14 months IIRC but all you have to do is re-register the software and you are good to go for another 14 months or so.

The only thing I changed on my set-up from the default was to disable the 'auto update' feature as it would 'call home' to check for updates periodically and if I was flying in FSX at the time the pop up window it displayed to show it had been updated would take priority from FSX until it was closed. By selecting the manual update option I now have to manually update of course which I usually do once a week but if I happen to forget Windows XP pops up a warning message to say the updates are out of date when they reach 14 days old which is useful.

I'm certain that PeterM has noted very little system overhead with Avast and he was so impressed with the free version, he bought the payware one!! That in itself is a good recommendation. ;-)

Correct and I find it superb and trouble free...My version Auto-updates sometimes more than once per day and announces verbally when it has done it (you can turn the sound off if you want). Don't think the free version Auto-updates but I think that is the only difference. My wife and I have been using it for years now and I thoroughly recommend it :flying: ...Thinking about it...I've a feeling the free version does Auto-update as my wife has that version

The free version of Avast does auto-update. As Pete mentioned, sometimes there are several updates during the day. I have used Avast free edition for several years and highly recommend it.

No probems with free AVG here, Tony; manual and/or scheduled updates work fine. I have version 7.5.549 by the way.

That is areally bad situation - if the user responds to the false positive and removes the file the system will probably not boot or it will go into a continuous boot cycle. There is a fix but if you can't boot, you most likely can't know about it or get it without going to another computer.
