9800 GTX+ Ordered

Post by ChrisHunt »

I touch early but I've ordered the LeadTec Winfast 9800 GTX+, which hopefully will be with me tomorrow. I'll let you know how I get on with the change from my trusty ATI 1950 Pro.

BTW as I previously mentioned I intend to free cycle the 1950 Pro so if anyone is interested in it please let me know. I have the box, connectors, CD etc so is easy to ship. The 1950 Pro is not a bad card, albeit last generation, and would suite anyone already with a last generation card and a lower number! It is the 512Mb version.

As another BTW I searched pretty much everywhere for the best price and Overclockers.co.uk (from where I started the search) were as low as I could get; coupled with the fact that I've never had a problem with their service and delivery it was a no brainer. I have noticed that Amazon and Play are also selling components but their prices are roughly 20-25% higher than the specialists.

Regards,
Chris

I've got a normal 9800GTX, although I have it clocked at "+" speeds. Can handle any game I throw at it, even Crysis at 1680X1050 res. You should be pleased with it :)

I've got my eyes on a GTX 280 mind you lol

Hi Jonesey - I looked at the GTX series and apart from the cost they don't give a great account of themselves when it comes to FSX! God knows why not but at least it stopped me from being tempted! For details of how different cards perform with FSX have a look at Tomshardware.com and the Q3 2008 Graphics Charts.

Funny how to differentiate the new from the old NVidia have moved the GTX to the front of the name and lowered the numbers to give a good long run with that name eh!

Chris

Well it's in... not much of an increase in FPS - the odd one or two here and there but there is a marked improvement in image quality and overall smoothness. Is it worth it? Definitely yes. FSX was quite keen on all the settings being pushed to the right and although it's nice to know that FSX thinks it's possible, in the real world I had to dial one or two things back a bit, particularly the water textures.

A word of warning though for anyone considering this card - it is bl**dy hooge (that's Suffolk speak for huge ;-) ). Fortunately I have a big Coolermaster case but it was a bit of a stretch getting some of the wires around it. Surprisingly it is at least as quiet as my old ATI 1950 Pro, which is a relief given some of the comments I had heard.

Regards,
Chris

Just fitted one of these yesterday as my old card was giving up the ghost :'(

Only trouble is I can't seem to get the anti-aliasing to work whether its application controlled or in any one of the override settings :dunno:

Any ideas?

cheers

Hi Fraser....do you mean the AA settings in the FS9/FSX setings menu...?

What size is your screen..? Do you have the very latest drivers with the horrible Catalyst Control Cneter...?

I had the same problem with the early drivers, have it set to "override everything" in the control panel.

Hi Guys, :)

Tried all the various settings in both the FS9 hardware display tab and the Nvidia control panel.

It looks fine in the sim with the latest drivers, as opposed to the disc supplied one, but the spinning preview
is still jaggy; I could see the wires on the Vimy in the preview with my old 6800GT, but now they are just dotted lines.

Main thing is the view from the cockpit is fine and it's more fluid :)

cheers
