Getting Started

Hi all, newbie here. Just a few questions, sorry if they seem a bit obvious. How do you go about getting a training flight? I understand you have to get a type rating before you can fly any of the fleet. Also, I have based myself at St Mawgan when I signed up, should I move to another airport as there dont seem to be any flights showing at St. Mawgan. Again appologies if these seem like stupidly obvious questions

Hi Garry, do you meen fly a few routes ofline? I'm going to have a practice this afternoon but was just wondering about the above questions for later reference when I want to start training and getting TR'd.

Yes......for a start a few shorter routes off line just to iron out any bad habits like forgeting landing lights and get familiar with fuel loading and power settings.

Don't worry.. it's a logical question and I'll do my best to answer it for you. St Mawgan has a host of flights going to it but no aircraft are based there (it's purely a route) so.. what you need to do is decide what aircraft you wish to fly then find where the training flights are for those aircraft. For certain, they ALL start at a 'base' airport so there'll be aircraft available. There is a list of aircraft bases available down here somewhere.. I'll dig the reference out for you ;-) As an example.. VC10's (all varieties), Trident3's, Vickers Vanguard 951/953 and DH Comet (off the top of my head) are all based at LHR so once a TR has been allocated, you'll find training flights from there. The One-Eleven's are based all over the shop but a good place to start is Manchester as I know there are training flights from there. ;-)

As a newbie, you'll be expected to fly the FULL training flights (6 block) for your first rating. Subsequent TR's will be given after a '4 block' if that makes sense. After that, you keep your type rating active by flying the aircraft. If you don't fly a particular type you have a rating on for over 12months, your rating for that type will be recinded. However, you can get it back again by doing a '2 block' TR flight

Send a PM to John (RAF_Quantum) and me over on FSA and we'll allocate your TR's there.

Re your last post above.. it depends very much on which aircraft you want to fly mate. All of David Maltby's aircraft can be downloaded from his website (link on the main site page). Many of the others can be found at ClassicBritishFiles and some from here in the members forum

Once you're confident, ask for the TR and you'll get it. Complete the first '6 block' and you're off earning money for both yourself and the airline. Absolutely NO pressure to fly.. no pilots roster or the like. Fly when you can, when you want to and no more than that. Just remember to log into FSA once every 90days if you know an inactive period is on the horizon and that will maintain your pilot status. We have no control over this so keep it in the back of your mind. You should get a reminder email generated from FSA saying that you've not been active so when/if you receive one.. just go and login over there. You don't have to fly.. just login. If after 90days you've NOT logged in at least once, the system automatically removes you. As I said.. completely out of our hands.

In the meantime.. get your practice flights in off line noting the things you have to do to not get a penalty. No speeding on the ground (keep below 25kts unless on your takeoff roll).. Landing lights must be on at unstick and stay on up to 1000ft. They can remain on up to FL100 (10000ft) but must be OFF above this level. On landing.. make sure they're on before you reach 1000ft ;-) . Make sure the flight starts with your parking brake ON and that it ends with you stopped and your parking brake ON. No Speeding below FL100 (10000ft).. that is, keep the IAS below 250kts.
If there are any more, I can't think of them If anyone notices I've missed something, please add it ;-)

Your first flight will be your most nervous.. mine certainly was but after that, it'll all become second nature.. or should if you've been paying attention Advice will be given along the way if and when necessary and as has already been mentioned.. any questions, just ask ;-)
