By some luck, I had 2 more ex-Vanguard pilots onboard EP today and they both said it was a heavy beast to fly though they both enjoyed their time flying them. One complained about the routes (he was fed up of seeing Glasgow!) and ended up going to One-Elevens flying the German sectors.. the other enjoyed the routes and ended up going to Cathay flying 747's

Perish the thought! Tom Cruise in elevator shoes reprising another pilot role? :roll: There are enough Brit actors over here without resorting to that! Besides, I am only in it for the "as real as it gets" $$$$.

The Vanguard was, I believe, the largest airliner at least, to have manual controls.

Was it very heavy or did they balance it out nicely?

Yes it was the biggest with manual controls Garry, but the feel was very nice in roll and a bit heavy on the elevator. Mere mortals like me and Dick Stewart who flew several whole summers of "Night Shift" with skipper Nobby West, used to trim all the time even down the short final approach. Nob West with his massive strength never trimmed down the approach...I remember on one occasion that Dick trimmed down the approach deliberately the wrong way, so that when Nob took control for his landing, he would be WELL out of trim. We watched him closely and he took control, never turned a hair or made a comment or even trimmed...He just made his customary "greaser" and once again Dick and I were buying the beer on the nightstop :-( I know that Dick and I really enjoyed our summers crewed with Nob, but it was very rare for Nob to be buying any beers (we always ran a sort of competition on the landings and the scores were paid off in beers at the next nightstop). :flying:
