To be quite honest the two flights I did in the Viscount were a bit worrying for a fighter pilot...It seemed to me that both pilots were working like one armed paper hangers on the Germany flights. I particularly noticed the the two ADF sets had the old "coffee grinder" tuners and as a lot of the waypoints were NDBs they seem to spend a lot of time twirling these things on the overhead panel and it seemed to me that while twirling and listening for the signal from each beacon, they were rather "out of the loop".

In contrast, the mighty Vanguard was new technology and crewed by THREE pilots. All aids were instantly tuned accurately by dialling up some digits and then could easily be idented...Remember, as a fighter pilot I had never had any nav aids and had always navigated with a map, so the big learning curve when changing to airline pilot was coping with getting the RMI needles to point at the correct beacons or VORs in good time as we snaked along these imaginary lines in the sky. Rather surprisingly I also seemed to find it a bit difficult making all the "position reports" to ATC, that were required at that time. :flying:

So I did most of my years as a First Officer on this mighty beast:-

Image
The Vickers Vanguard.

Image
I joined BEA on 12th October 1964 but it wasn't until 23rd February 1965 that I started my base training on the real aircraft in Malta.

Image
The time between the two dates was busy with Ground School instruction, the ARB type certification and Flight Simulator Training.

Image
The Base Training at Malta was only four flights spread over 7 days...The first was High Level Familiarisation, Stalling and Circuits and Landings.

Image
The other 3 flights were all Circuits and Landings on 4 and 3 engines, with the last one being at night.

Image
Back home to the UK and I started my Line Training on normal passenger carrying services on the 5th March 1965

Image
I seem to have been signed up in my ATPL for the DH.C.1 Vanguard on 18th June 1965 and soon after that I was flying P1 u/s flights with a signature from each Captain.

Image
I operated as a First Officer on Vanguards till 28th October 1971 and then after a spell as First Officer on the BAC Super 111, I returned to the Vanguard for my command course on 27th August 1973.

Image
The course lasted till 27th September 1973 and on that day I flew my final check with Roger Neaves.

Image
I flew as Captain on the Vanguard/Merchantman until 12th December 1974 before moving over to the Trident 3 as Captain for my remaining 10 years with BEA/British Airways.

Image
These screenshots were all taken at Aerosoft's Hanover and we did at one time have a regular service to there from Heathrow via Cologne.

Image
As on the previous post, the shots are really to show the operation of Aerosoft's AES...

Image
...but they do show off the Vanguard pretty well :flying:

What a great aeroplane :) I remember a Hunting Cargo Airlines one that used to come into Liverpool. I was only a small child at the time and I remember being amazed at the interesting noise that it used to make

Hi Peter

The Vanguard was, I believe, the largest airliner at least, to have manual controls.

Was it very heavy or did they balance it out nicely??

Hi Garry

A Triple-7 pilot I had onboard EP recently (ex-Vanguard) said he remembered it as a being a bit of a handful although it flew well. That said.. the Vanguard was his first airliner having previously qualified on a Beech Baron so the differences there are obvious! Closer to home.. I can tell you that flying the VC10 sim at Brize feels like being in control of a row of houses (albeit a very fast row of houses) when compared to sitting in my toyroom flying it with yoke and pedals in flightsim! :worried:

I take it you mean a row of houses in Chelsea or somewhere, not council houses :o

Yes Dave it would depened what you were used to.

Coming off Daks or DC4's and the like it would seem luxury but Peter being used to fighters may have found it a bit like an old truck

I can imagine at lower speeds during landing etc with more and bigger imputs it could be quite tiring but at speed with the size of the controls imputs would be small.
