Its actually much easier than all that, you just right click and select run as administrator.... easy as pie. :)

I'm sure I was doing that and it was still refusing to save over/edit the original flight sim files.

I've just (yesterday) gone over to Vista 64bit and so far so good. The only problem I've had is that the default switch off mode puts the PC into hibernation... the only problem is is that my graphics card refuses to wake up! Once I found out what the problem was the PC (until I investigate further) is now switched off with the "switch off" option. BTW if this happens to you just interrupt all power to the PC for 30 seconds or so and you should be okay.

I'm running SP1 and have had no significant problems with User Account Control so I've left that on for the time being. Generally I find that PC input/output throughput is much improved with file searches, loading, copying etc running significantly faster than under XP. There are some frustrations such as trying find where Vista puts things (especially downloads) but in general, with the service pack, I have an overall positive impression of Vista.

Regards,
Chris

P.S. I was hoping that my graphics card really was up the swanny as this would have been the ideal excuse to upgrade - very dissappointed to find out that it wasn't.

Given a choice I would go back to XP.

Vista seems to be very unstable, I have had more lock-outs and "x is no longer responding" messages than I like to think. The thing that really irks is the list of problems Vista has encountered and their possible solutions. Most solutions don't exist and being referred to a manufacturers site for a solution only to fget a message that "there is no solution to this problem at the moment...." gets me into lift off mode. Every time FS9 gets dumped I get told to download the FS9 update - which is already installed......

The UAC is one big pain and it was ages before I found out how to disable it

My other 2 PCs run XP and they are impeccably well behaved so I suppose I can't really complain too much.

Regards

Allan..

Your last point is a valid one for me too. I network 5 pc's here in total and previous experience networking 2 different OS's was such that I made my latest build XP and NOT Vista. I've been daring with it as this is the only one of the 5 that has SP3 installed

I hear you on this one, I"m going "Will I" "Won't I" with this new rig I'm getting together I really don't see the need to go with 64bit with only 4 meg RAM and
the stories I'm seeing with people having a hard time with Vista. XPP for me has never been an issue and Black Vipers website was a great help getting
all the stupid services that don't need to run turned off.

I see he now has the same up for Vista as well. Meanwhile I think I'll go with, if it aint broke why fix it ...............for now !

QX6850 extreme 3ghz running at 3.6
4 gig OCZ DDR2 1066Mhz PC8500

I find Vista very stable and safe and self-healing. I run it on all three laptops in the house and don't miss anything about XP. Microsoft has said that the next version of Windows in 18 months or so will be a development of Vista so holding on to XP to wait for that might be a bit disappointing.

Like most people I've had a couple of driver incompatibilities with older devices or older programs not working, but stuff that needed upgrading anyway.

As to it being more processor and memory intensive, yes it is as it does more than XP and yes, some of it is cosmetic but nice to use. It does need a more powerful PC to run it so is best bought with a new PC rather than an upgrade.

I have left the UAC enabled as I prefer the added security. If you want to keep that security but are having trouble accessing files, you might need to change the individual folder properties, and there are more options than in XP. From within a folder go to View/Customise This Folder/General and ensure that 'Read Only' is unticked if appropriate. Then open the Sharing tab and press Advanced Sharing - tick 'Share This Folder' - press 'Permissions' and you can choose which users or groups have free access to that particular folder. Sounds like a palaver but you only have to do it once per folder and the UAC protects all your other folders for you. Disabling UAC allows anybody access to all folders.

A family member bought my Mum a budget laptop the other day.

Just a basic one for basic surfing and family history etc

Funny.......due to customer feedback they were offering it as Vista or XP and the XP loaded versions are the more popular

No idea why but for some reason the demand is there and they have re introduced the XP option. :dunno:

The XP is XP Professional February 2008

It would appear that the general public know a 3-legged horse when they see one mate ;-)

Tell your mum she's become a 'Silver Surfer' then run!
