Fast quantities of fuel won't explode, they'll just burn, you need to vaporise the fuel for an explosion. Underground storage tanks solve the problem as there's generally only a small area that can be exposed and start to burn, think the oil wells at the end of Gulf War 1.

Good point mate, but I doubt a massive burning fire on your airfield is desirable.... and what happened at Bruncefield oil depot? :think:

If you want to talk burning fuel, look at DFW. They had a horrible experince when the Delta L1011 went down and crashed into the fuel farm.
