A curious picture...

Post by petermcleland »

I took this picture in January 1960 when we were under canvas in Bahrain for some Exercise. The idea of the picture was to open the shutter for some time, with the camera on a tripod on the Control Tower balcony...It was pitch dark and I thought I would just get the airport lights and perhaps the odd aircraft lights streaks as they took off or landed. Being totally dark I did not know that there was an parked aircraft present and did not see it till the film was developed some time later. Some people do not easily see the aircraft, but it is left of centre above the signals square lights. We discussed how it got there and it was generally agreed that vehicles driving on a road behind the Tower had swept the DC3 with their headlights and illuminated it dimly and briefly enough times for it to register on the film.

Here we are in the "Squadron Crewroom" tent...Left to right Tim Riddihough, Alastair MacNab and Tim Cohu... Note the floor!

These pictures emerge as I continue to dust off, clean and scan my old transparencies to convert them into decent digital pictures :flying:

Hi Peter

I love the crew Tent pic.

something about it looks like it could have been last week.

it doesn't suffer from fade etc like most old pics do.

great shot of that moment in time.

Regards
Rick

They are Kodachrome 35mm transparencies taken with a camera long gone...It was called a "Braun Paxette" and for Game photography I used a 135mm lens:-

No Leif...That is in that Game Area just outside Nairobi...The approach to Embakazi (Jomo Kenyatta) passes over it :)

Yes Nairobi N.P - When we stayed at the PanAfric you could hear the Lions at night from the hotel :)

I went to the Mara twice - both times to a place called Siana Springs -- wonderful stuff

Thanks for the photos Peter
