I have automatic updates enabled but not the install untill I see what they are. The little shield that appears can come and go and I find it sometimes disappears for ages. Accordingly, when I know there are updates - like on "patch Tuesday", I usually go to the Windows update page and install them from there - a lot quicker most of the time and I know the install has been done.

Hi Nigel

I've always had it set to automatic but left to decide what and when to install

That has never been the problem.....upsetting internet connection was the only issue, but it seems to have been Zone Alrm causing it......still no kick off the net since uninstalling :dancer:

Hi there,

I have auto updates turned on and I allowed some updates last night. Turned on PC just now and unable to connect to internet. I switched off Zonealarm and turned on the windows firewall and all is ok. Turning Zonealarm back on again and I lose the internet. Looks like MS have done something to scupper Zonealarm.

Regards

John

To be fair its actually Zonealarm haven't been patching their software... although I here there is now an updated Zonealarm available on their website. Microsfts first responsibility is to patch its OS. If a third part software company hasn't been ared to patch their product its hardly Microsofts fault. If we all got some horrible virus (not in this case, but in theory) because MS hadn't patched the OS, then fair enough, but its very rare that this happens. :cpu:

Hi guys,

I only came across this thread yesterday so was fore-warned.

I updated Zone Alarm Pro before downloading the security updates and so far have had no problems..but then I've just noticed that my internet security is set at medium...as per the Zone Alarm work-around..

..not sure I want to fiddle with it..
