Re: Google Earth pic I found
Talking of interesting views, I found this image on Microsoft's Virtual Earth:-

The house in the centre of the picture, at Leconfield in Yorkshire, is the only Married Quarter I ever had during my 12 years in the RAF

I know Leconfield well Peter ;-)
In 1978 Leconfield was the Army driver training school and the runways you knew and loved had been turned into pseudo roads with roundabouts and traffic lights at the intersections...
I was there for months...lights then HGV...taking my HGV test around Hull city centre on a Saturday morning was a real treat
..then combat cross-country training, then Humbers (Pigs), then 432s......
...after all that I was glad to get back to Catterick :o
ATB,
Derek ;-)

Life must have been bad if you were glad to go back to Cat Del
Pigs.. now that takes me back... and foxes and ferrets. seems like a lifetime ago. I remember being driven around Kinegar in a Pig and ... a Warrior... special treat as was in work with my dad. think I was about 11. The Warrior was in for a new exhaust and the noise of it was wild. I never knew what the "proper" name was for the pigs.
Ben.

Re: Google Earth pic I found
Hi Ben,
I'm not sure about now but back then the Pig was based on the lovely round-nosed Humber short wheel base 1ton truck , often seen as garage recovery truck ;-)
The problem was that 4 tons of armour and Makrolon was built onto the basic chassis but the brakes weren't upgraded...which meant 20mph max or don't bother trying to stop.....
The pigs also had a Rolls-Royce engine dropped in for good measure...sounded a treat when starting up.
First gear had a link to drop it into 4 wheel drive..this broke easily, so your oppo had to haul on a bit of rope just as you put it into gear..proper driving skills
So there you were, huddled in that armour, flak jacket and riot helmet on, hardly any vision to the front, no room to move, driving down the Falls Road expecting the worst...
..those were the days...
ATB,
Derek

Indeed mate. There were the 6 wheeled APC's too... can't remember the name, but remember when there was a busy spell on my Dad having to work late while they churned through repairs. At least you weren't in the back of a fibre glassed landrover.
I think a good many of them are now lining the bottom of Beaufort's Dyke.
Ben.

Re: Google Earth pic I found
The six-wheeled job was a Saracen mate ;-)
They were designed to go across roundabouts instead of around them.....
..and I did spend time in the back of a 'floppy' Rover...that's where my RT kit was..
I'm glad things have changed, even if they haven't been sorted ;-)
Derek ;-)
edit: Apologies Tony, your post has been taken off track...but you must have known that was going to happen
