Windows Update Woes

Post by Garry Russell »

In the past when ever I have used the windows updates........Security seems the problem, I have trouble :-(

Basically it keep dropping off the net every few minuets although Skype and Messenger remain live. :brick:

Uninstalling has always fixed the problem which no one ever seems to believe :worried:

Yesterday I decided to update again due to this latest scare and left it update and shut down.

Tried to run this moring and AVG would not enable, Zone alarm was getting swithched off constantly and even though it said I was connected to the net I could not open any pages at all.... not even Skype or messenger would run :o

So I took them off again and all is sweet. :)

What's going on???? :dunno:

Hi Nigel

I don't get any error messages with this..........just not staying on the net normally or connecting at all in this case

I have had run DLL errors occasionally but not with this and nothing recent of that sort

This has been a case all along....I have never sucessfully updated windows.

Yo Mr R :)

Just so that you know you're not alone.. I get odd things happen on this old pc now (XP2400) with windows update. It will tell me that an update (or updates) is available.. I have a look then generally click OK to download. It goes off to do it's own thing and sometimes.. that's the last I see of it :o A couple of days ago, similar happened. The little shield popped up.. I had a look and clicked ok.. the shield disappeared and that was it  Went to turn the pc off last night and the turn off/restart/standby screen had a note on the bottom saying that I could turn off and install the updates or turnoff without installing the updates. Been so long now, I can't even remember what the updates are or if they're they ones I agreed to :brick:

Again.. similar happened with WinXP SP3 (though some tried to say I said no and not yes). Clicked ok and never saw it again  Fortunately.. this sort of thing only happens on the old pc which has served me very well for many years and continues to do so. In the event.. I'm glad SP3 never appeared as I dread to think what might have happened :drinkers:

I had the shield a couple of nights ago as well, and installed whatever it was OK - (running XP SP3) - if the net's dropping out, have a look to see your AV isn't blocking access (it will always allow the permitted connections such as Skype) - also, try a modem reboot. (IE unplug it, and unplug the connection cable).

Sometimes just rebuilding the connection will work. Also, depends on your browser. I run IE7 and Firefox - any issues with IE the first thing I do is see if FF will connect.

Garry, I personally recommend installing Firefox. Import your favourites but keep IE as your default browser. No resources really used except when you run it. It is an exellent way to see if the connection itself, or windows is at fault.

I'm a bit perplexed that for some reason your updates don't appear to be registering on the system - does this mean you are installing the same thing more than once?

Hi Jim

I don't want to use Firefox....IE has to work properly and Netscape was also cut out at times by updates although I rarely use it.

It is the updates that are causing the problem.

The failure to apparently update mentioned was only rare occasions but they have always updated or at least appeared on the update list.

TBH I am only curious as it works fine as it is ....I just don't know why updating windows security stops me using the internet properly.
