I sometimes use a second monitor for FS on my laptop. It's set up using the nVidia control panel as 'dualview' (configured independently) and I can drag windows from one monitor to display on the other.
What I want to do is to drag the GPS window onto the second monitor leaving the cockpit view clear on my laptop. I can drag the GPS off the laptop but it doesn't move across to the monitor - although the mouse does. The GPS sort of hangs invisibly in the space between the two Right clicking on the GPS shows the 'undock window' command greyed out.
Anyone know if it's possible to do this, please? I'm running FS9 in fullscreen mode.
The GPS (assuming its the default FS one) can only move within the main FS window, it isn't an independant window, its actually a child of the main FS display. So when you move it over to what you think is the other monitor, you are in effect moving it out of the display within FS.
It should be possible whether you're nVidia or ATi although there are much better options available. I run FSNav on a second monitor for every flight I do and wouldn't leave home without it. It's payware but is without exception, the single best addon I have ever bought.
Unfortunately.. there is no FSNav for FSX and this more than anything else is the one thing that is stopping me moving to the new sim ;-)
Dave - FSNav sounds excellent. I'll go and have a look. I've never had the time for long distance flying until recently and I'm starting to get a bit more adventurous so navigation is rather more serious! You may not have noticed, but I borrowed A40 AB when I was at Brooklands and I'm doing a round-the-world jolly - presently between Kolkata and Hanoi of all places! Nice scenery though
I can second Dave's recommendation of FS Nav with a few minor caveats. I use it for every flight also, although I don't have a secondary monitor. It is a fantastic programme and well worth the money. That said, the support from the creator of FSNAV has dwindled over the years. Updates for user created SID-STARS used to be available for download but this feaure has been unavailable for years. At one time when I was fairly new to FSNAV, I sent an email to support with a question, I never received a response. Yes I had Read the F*ing Manual!
:-(
Oh dear, I just checked http://www.fsnavigator.com/ and it appears that "Sales are Closed" the download links are for users who already have the registration code.
Edit:
More info from a post in The simFlight Network Forum:
Thanks for that info, gentlemen. Without wishing to seem ungrateful; sadly, I'm quite happy with the basic flight planner in FS
At present, I don't need any more detail than that gives me to get from A to B so I'm reluctant to start learning about stuff I won't use
I don't use the GPS very often but it's sometimes a useful check if I'm flying to a VOR without DME so I'll just close it again when I've had a look. Thanks again for getting back to me.
Thanks for that Nige.. it's pretty much what I expected.
I wouldn't move to FS9 until FSNav was updated (even though I had FS9 installed) and over the months after this finally happened.. the airac info that had been freely given beforehand then became payware so the last freebie on offer was the last one I used. Later.. the author suffered more than his fair share of personal tragedy and I was more than a little surprised to see a 'suggestions' link for what items users would like to see go or remain for any further version.. this being FSX. It does look now very much like his RW circumstances have overtaken that of his virtual world and I.. along with many thousands like me are now left high and dry. The current alternatives for FSX are (IMHO) inferior and until something comes along to light my fire to the same degree.. I will remain in FS9 for all but beta testing. Sadly.. I don't feel confident beta testing in FSX given the quality/functionality/accuracy of the current offerings which makes FSX even more of a game than a sim than it was!
Going back to the original question, I find that I can move items such as GPS, autopilot windows etc to the second screen without any difficulty on the Trident in the VC mode, but not if the 2D panel is in operation. I am not quite sure why this is

Ah! That's interesting. I've only tried it with the VC10 - which, of course hasn't got a VC. I'll have a go later on with the other DM models with VCs. Thanks for that tip!
