FSX Sound Technology

Post by Ben Hollinsworth »

Hello all,

I'm hoping somebody will be able to shed some light on the topic of FSX sound technology, or perhaps point me in the right direction.

Nothing gives me goosebumps more than seeing and hearing a Spitfire roar past at a few hundred feet. So to cut a long story short, while FSX may offer the visuals, what's the story with regards to audio?

I know it is about simulating flight and not an airshow, but for me that's where my interest originates from.

Can the FS sound mechanics be taken further?

I'm talking about recognising physicals:

- The speed of sound, so we hear the whine and then the roar
- Sound change according to going inverted
- Effect wind has on sound
- The whistle of a P-51
- etc etc etc

If this is possible, I would enthusiastically contribute marketing support to such a project.

Thanks,

Ben Hollinsworth

The sound engine in FSX is much more powerful than the one in FS9 and it can do some of what you describe with the use of 'sound cones'. This allows you to have changing sounds as you pan around the aircraft or have changing sounds in fly-by mode so you get the Doppler effect as the aircraft approaches, passes and then goes away from you. I don't know a lot of details on how the system works, I just know the technology exists although very few aircraft creators seem to take advantage of it.

Hello,

Garry - I'm in persuit of knowledge to achieve something in FSX. There are no financial implications, but I thought it worth mentioning that I would have something to contribute.

Larry - Many thanks. I wonder if this would conflict, as the engine sound would have to be held off and kicked in according to your position. hmmm

Technicalities that I hope someone out there has a hold of! :)

Cheers,

Ben

The sound that a realair spitfire makes when moving away from the viewpoint makes the hairs on my neck stand up!

Basically you get two sounds, for example in a jet engine you get the whine at the front and the roar from the back.

The RealAir 'flying away' effect is certainly on the right lines!

Garry, sorry I don't mean for this to sound like a commercial venture, it's just questions - I shall not forget the nature of this forum.

Cheers,

Ben
