For the Classic FAA fans out there...HMS Hermes Circa 1960

Hi All,

After watching the old BOAC, and "Wish they Could all be Caledonian" videos just now on another post I thought some of you would appreciate this look at
HMS Hermes in the 1960's in her Vixen, Scimitar, and Whirlwind Days.

You just cannot beat that style of narration....

Ah well.. it IS the same one (Seaking posted it mate) From the 'Look at Life' series shown in Rank cinemas during the 60's. You can get dvd compilations which are a giggle. I have 'LaL in the 60's - Military Aviation' and 'LaL in the 60's - Civil Aviation'. A snip at around £16 and good content ;-) Carlton TV produce them ( http://www.video125.co.uk )

Apologies for the duplication, I emailed the link of it to Seaking and Skippy a week or two ago, did not realise that Seaking posted it, oh well the more the merrier!

I'll check out those DVD's they sound good, I have a great one called "Hands to Flying Stations" which is a RN flight Safety Video on the Ark about 76'ish, you just cannot beat that style of narration and the music.

I hope all is well back in Reading? I moved from Lower Earley to Los Angeles (I think LA is safer!! Lol) back in October last year before I had a chance to visit the museum in Woodley.

All well in sunny Reading I let my membership slide at Woodley as I found I wasn't going often enough.. my day off being spent at Brooklands every Wednesday. I actually meant to keep it going but the reminder came and I lost it. By the time I found it again.. 2 or 3 months had passed :roll:

Anyway.. on a brighter note, you'll have to let me know how you get the Ark into FSX

And the angled flightdeck too, so conventional wisdom has it. Don't know the name of the first carrier to have one, though.

The angled FD was first trialed in HMS Triumph and a couple of carriers were modified to incorporate one as a consequence. The first carrier to be 'built' with one was none other than HMS Ark Royal ;-)

Btw VTTS.. the Ski Ramp is another Brit invention

Thanks for the info Dave. And we musn't forget the mirror landing system, though I'm not sure that the Americans use it, or ever did. I think they use a system of lights or similar.
