Weather change rate

Post by nigelb »

I am curious - what setting in FS9 do you use for the Weather change rate slider? I have mine set to "Medium" but am thinking of trying "Mild" and was wondering if this helps eliminate clouds suddenly popping up nearby - or does the change slider effect other things? In other words what the heck does that slider do?

Nigel,

It just controls the "Dynamic" weather change rate in FS...If you have it OFF then there will be no dynamic change rate and it will only change on receipt of new data. I have mine set at mild which means there will be slight changes between the 15 minute interval online updates. FS9 was the first version to have dynamically changing weather built into it...In theory the programming will look at the temperature and humidity etc. and change the weather accordingly  I think a Chinese lady who has since moved away from Microsoft was responsible for a large part of that weather programming...It is probably broken in FSX along with many other things

Personally I use ActiveSky (6.5 for FS9, X for FSX) to control weather. Worth the investment, for sure. As for the clouds "popping" in that's probably more in your graphics settings than the weather. All my graphics, weather and traffic are maxed out, though, so I'm not totally sure any more.

I don't think the popping up clouds are graphic card probs more like what I have

I fly away from the airport then at about ten miles the weather clears to something better...not totally clear but fair weather :)

When I head back in I can see the airport then suddendly weather appears form all over the place and viz goes down form 80 miles to perhap one.

In other words I am flying in and out of weather areas with no transition in between :dunno:

I did try Active sjy and the day I loded it it was raining.

Then everytime FS loaded no matter how clear and sunny it was it was raining for about two minuets and it would stop.

What I meant by graphics related is the cloud draw distance in FS. You can set it to draw clouds quite far away, or keep them in close depending on how powerful your video card is. The situation you describe sounds like it is, indeed, swapping between weather stations with no gradation at all.

One of the things AS will let you do is import your flight plan. It will then configure the weather from beginning to end of your flight and update it accordingly. Much smoother than using the FS built in weather manager. It can be tricky to get AS set up, though, since there are far more options you can tune. I can't figure why it would do as you describe. Sounds like a cache somewhere that isn't being cleared between sessions.

The beauty of AS is that if it receives no data for a given area.. it doesn't leave it blank/clear. It averages out what you've just flown out of and what you'll fly into on the other side of the non-reporting wx area and give you that.. no drastic, immediate changes ;-)

Maybe I should try it again sometime.

TBH I found it inferior to the default so perhaps it was just not working correctly :dunno:

That averaging out Dave mentions is what I would expect these things to do so it does sound better.

Very nice Dan

Do you get better weather in FS.X or the same cr@p that FS.9 and mere mortals in the real world get???
