In the early 1970s there was a Flight Engineer on BOAC VC 10s ( Speedbird may remember him) who had no moustache, but the finest set of mutton chop whiskers you have ever seen . Sadly, these are now wholly out of fashion

I would sooner snoot a cock...
but nearly seriously, in the 60s I can remember strapping a pilot in who used to carefully tuck his handlebar inside his mask to ensure a good seal. For once, QRs make sense! :flying:

I'm sure I've read that on at least one of the F-105 wings in Thailand during the Vietnam war it was the custom to wear a "100 Mission" 'tache. It was considered very bad luck to trim it or shave it off before completing 100 missions up north. Perhaps this General is unaware of some traditions of his own air force?
