ANOTHER FSX Problem!

Post by RobDob »

I need some help again from you fine folk! I deleted FSX from my C drive as I was installing a bigger secondary drive. I have come to re-install FSX and all it gives me is the option to repair or remove the program. When I try either it fails stating 'error 1316 A network error occurred while attempting to read from the file C:\WINDOWS\installer\microsoft flight simulator X.msi'

Any suggestions!! I'm stuck! AAARRRGGGGHHH

Go to Regedit and make sure all the microsoft/FSX entries are removed mate.... :cpu:

Also do a search for.msi and make sure that is deleted for FSX....

Done that and deleted what was in program files/microsoft games/fsx. Still the same problem Is there somewhere else I should look in regedit too?

I'm assuming you deleted the FSX folder, rather than using the remove program option from the control panel? Anyway if so, never do that again!!

Your best bet if you don't want to mess around with the Registry too much is to use a program such as Registry Mechanic to clean it out and fix any problems in there (they'll be some because even using the proper uninstall rputines doesn't always work). If you google Registry Mechanic it should take you to a page you can download the trial version from. You may have to pay for the full version to fix your problem with FSX, but it's generally worth it as it helps optimise your system if you run it every few months.

Further to what Tony said, type regedit in your run dialog box from the Start menu, then hit Ctrl+F, and search for 'FSX.' Delete the entry that pops up if it's related to FSX, then hit F3, and delete the next relevant entry, and so on, until all FSX entries are gone. Be SURE to check the name of each entry you delete carefully and ensure that it's an FSX file, or you may end up breaking another program. :)

Rob... how do you fancy a re install of your OS? Thats pretty much what your going to have to do... I won't repeat the never ever... ok I will, never ever "Delete" ANY program from the hard disk... always use the uninstall option, and if for some reason that doesn't work, contact the vendor and ask them if they have an uninstall program, most will do.

The trouble is when a program is installed it etches data into the registry, and not just files that are obviously associated with the program. dll files and GUIDS get registered, and you pretty much will never find them all.

Since windows 95 mate... don't do deletes... (Sorry to harp on) :worried:
