Where's the airport??

Post by Tarasdad »

So today I decide to do a Vanguard flight from Edinburgh to Munich. I get it all set up, flight plan generated by FSBuild, aicraft loaded in FS, start FlyNET and load fuel. Takeoff and climbout were nominal, flight was without incident. Start descending for my approach, stable on altitude, should have visual on the airport about 20 miles out - except all I see is a green field. So I work in closer and...still just a green field. Where's my airport?? Then it dawns on me - I've used backdated sceneries, and one of them has turned the new EDDM off! Well, darn it all anyway. There's no way I'm just going to kill FS and do it over, not after spending most of the last three hours on the flight. So I do what any grumpy old fart like me would do and line up a perfect approach to where the runway should be, slide her in nice and easy, then taxi to where the terminal would be were the scenery there. FlyNET is happy, and I can now go back and reload EDDM for the return flight to Heathrow.

This is not something I would normally do, but I was in no mood to waste the hours spent and refly that flight later, essentially doubling the time for the flight. Lesson learned. Next time I double check and make sure BOTH airports are actually there before I fly.

Hi Barry..

Do you have Wolfgang's Munich installed by any chance?? I think this is the little tinker that's removed the 'new' airport. If you have his Le Bourget loaded too.. you'll probably find that Paris CDG is also missing

I have all the Early Sixties Scenery releases installed. Originally I had been converting FS9 for retro flying, primarily 1960's and earlier. Hasn't been a problem for my other VA flying since I was using FSX for more modern eras. However, since most of the aircraft we use here perform better in FS9 I've been using it more. EDDM is the first airport I've run into where one of the other sceneries had disabled it. There are others, but most are US airports that I know about and avoid. Haven't learned the European ones yet.

Still, even with the minor problem of vanished airports I do prefer flying the older skies, so to speak. More traditional piloting and less button pushing.

Some people have two versions of FS 9 loaded so they can play either modern or contempory.

No idea how they do it but it does happen especially with these guys that like to fly in the Thirties where little is common with today.

Hi Barry..

Sri for the continued slowness in response. Am in the process of rebuilding a LARGE FS9 build to a new pc and it's a daunting task trying to find all the bits done over a number of years

If I'm not mistaken.. I flew out to Munich on a 'Live' VA flight and found the airport gone. I hung in there and landed where the airport SHOULD be according to FSNav and FlyNET. I think.. for the sake of your sanity.. you'd better disable that particular airport (Wolfies version) and this will reinstate the original. FlyNET can only have one instance of an airport on the database which is a shame but a necessary evil ;-)

Wolfgang's version is EDMR, old Munich-Reim. It disables the new EDDM via an exclude switch. I fixed it by downloading a new EDDM scenery and putting it on a higher level than the retro scenery. Haven't had a chance to try it on FlyNET but hope to do so later this evening.

At one time I had FSX and two FS9 installs on my system. FSX was left modern, one FS9 retro for the 1950-1970 period, and one with Bill Lyons' Golden Wings conversion for pre-WWII flight. Full drives necessitated the removal of my GW install, and truth be told if I need more room it's going to be hard to choose between my current FS9 install and FSX. Seeing as a base FSX install eats 15GB I might be sorely tempted to remove it and leave FS9, especially when you factor in my preference for the more retro aircraft and sceneries. Hopefully I'll be able to upgrade my hard drives and make that decision moot.

Rgr that Barry ;-) Similar can be done with Le Bourget/CDG. Of course.. CDG didn't exist when LFPB was in it's hey day and I can see why he removed it. Pity I didn't realise what had happened as I did the same there!

Yep.. aware that EDDM was not the download.. should have made that clear (though you realised this anyway) ;-)

My new load system has 2 x 500gb drives towit, my new FS9 drive is 250gig which I hope will be enough to keep me busy for a while  In view of the size of Horizons GenX.. I left one 500 for FSX and the remainder of the FS9 drive partitioned for the OS. Fully understand your predicament though ;-)
