Horizon Gen X VFR updates!

Post by Trev Clark »

I have just had an e-mail informing me that (at last) the update that includes 'night textures' will be released (on DVD) on May 15th and I can now claim my free update! Or I can use it as a voucher (5 quid) against the new Version 2?

Seeing as I bought this in November 2006 and can now no longer run FSX, this is as much use to me as a chocolate teapot! Still, some of you may be interested!

When I bought it, I assumed that the update will be a matter of months, not years! Still at least they have honoured the promise of doing it free.

Ok... it arrived 3 lots of 4 DVD's... 3 hours to install... but bloody good, if only maybe a bit bright in the dead of night, but very good at dawn / dusk... water masks are a massive improvement. Here are a few picks fron a quick flight over bristol... bare in mind that resizing degrades the pics slightly, but will give you an idea. :)

I have not isnatlled the scenery yet due to lack of time, but reading the blurb on the installation instructions it talks about amax of 34gb per scenery area..now I have all three parts so am I looking at 100gb!! also it talks about two levels of detail which do you guys use?? what are the load up times for FSX with this scenery, only ask as I had VFR scenery in FS9 and got rid of it as it took bloody ages to load when I selected the flight, is this better now?
cheers Tony

My GenX folder is about 62Gb in size (all 3 areas), but I don't have the updated water masks or night lighting installed yet.
Both levels of detail are normally used together, though I think the high res textures are optional.

Load times are better than the old VFR sceneries, though it's still quite a bit longer than the default scenery. Obviously depends on PC spec.

Tony..

I've just installed FSX on a new system and spent 2 days installing GenX. I don't see much of a difference in load times yet but the system is completely virginal having only the OS, FS9, FSX, GenX and DG's Beaufighter installed :) . Make sure you defrag your FSX drive before you put GenX on as it throws stuff all over the darned place.

I don't have the revised water masks yet but intend getting them soon ;-) As I have your old GenX discs.. best thing to do would be to pay the fiver and get the complete v2 set which'll save you a few bob at the same time ;-)

I'm not seeing the ground as sharp as I did on the old, slow pc yet but haven't started fiddling

Hi,

Don't forget it's £5 per volume so if like me you have all three then it's £15 plus postage.

Regards

That's right - throw it in my face! :@

I opted for JF's Real Scenery and am wishing I'd gone the GenX way instead - but it's far too expensive (for me) to write off Real and buy GenX now. :-(
