I think that there is a general misunderstanding when it comes to modelling aircraft for FS (FS9 or FSX). One of the problems being that there are a number of developers (freeware and payware) that churn out models on a frequent and regular basis; trouble is the work that goes into these models is a fraction of the blood sweat and tears that has gone into the Hawk but it creates the false impression that it must be easy! Often there are contributions from a range of individuals or reuse of components (like FDEs) for a generic type of aircraft where the end result is something not unlike a Model T Ford, albeit in lots of colours and different shapes. Clearly this is far from the case with Rick's Hawk and also the models of other developers that take the time and effort to create something as close to the real thing as possible given the limitations of the sim.

I used to develop quite complex systems until I got lured into playing with signalling systems and other bits on the London Underground and I know that I am no longer current on what I used to do so any attempt to go back to it would mean a disproportionate effort on my part. Rick and people like him are constently staying current, as it were, and also looking ahead to new versions of software and of course the challenge (curse) of new releases of our beloved (or not) flight sims. Given that much of this is in so called spare time these are heroic efforts worth saluting and fortunately for us the results are often superb.

Separate the wheat from the chaff guys; for some developers (Rick and other members of this forum) these models are a labour of love as well as a means to earn a living for others the love bit is often missing (shareholders don't you know (joke)). Keep going Rick - the moment when you give birth to the Hawk and it receives rightful acclaim has to be worth it. For those developers churning out the Model Ts as supposedly the best thing since sliced bread, then they are fair game.

Regards,
Chris

Hi Tony

thats my Red so no idea mate.

as you know Red is never the same twice and never reproduced in photos.

so if you know the coorect RGB for the Red please let me know as nobody i contacted either in the Reds or in the RAF could come up with the RGB numbers.

at the moment it's std signal red (i know it's incorrect) as per the original "Ice Cream Van" Red,Grey,White FTS colours as i got fed up of trying different reds.

also FS does not display what you paint exactly as you paint it.

So Enlighten me mate (or get your coat!)

Regards
Rick

I've got a swatch in my photoshop palette labeled "Red Arrows red"
Can't remember where it came from, so I don't know how accurate it is (probably not very   )

The RGB is 193,1,0

:dunno:

I may even give up and stop developing as it's no longer fun due to this FS9 is better thing.

I have not tested your Hawk Rick for one simple valid reason, I'm a developer and my views would be just my views trying to convert your model to how 'I' think it should look and not necessarily how you should think it should look, make sense ?, it would only end up in a row so I'd rather not taint our friendship of a game.

I dont beta any other developers work ( so its nothing personal ) and I dont use developers to beta mine.

Personally I think developers should not beta other developers models, you simply want to try and convert it to your point of view and it is very hard to remain dis-passionate or objective IMHO.

The FS9 and FSx debate I'm sick to death of, I've chosen to remain in FS9 because I find the FSx SDK to bloody complex to model and compile models with ( read after eight years I'm too bloody lazy to reinvent the wheel again ! ) but reading all this tripe has made my mind up, its not worth the hassle getting involved with which is better or worse, I've been slapped and beaten in other forums and spoken to like some trogladite for persevering with FS9. I'll probably end up developing for FSx painfull as it is from Max so I'm shutting down everything, taking a bloody big holiday and reinventing the wheel yet again. The FS9 - FSx debate will kill this hobby better than any competing flight sim game anyone could have produced, it'll push develpers away and Rick is but one name I've seen that are really begining to question if its worth it any more.

Regarding critism of the Hawk, heres my view, when you part with cash or hard earned pennies, you have the right to complian and bitch like anything, until then you have no right at all and the developer is not obliged to enter a dialog in defense of WIP.

This all may sound a little harsh but developers will never loose, they can make what they want to there own vaules and use to there hearts content, its the sharing that will be costly to the non developers, that probably sounds like taking your toys home, but hey, the more you kick someone elses toys about the more likely they are to take them home.

Michael

You wont mate, I'm just so tired of the whole mess, forums, emails, must build this, dont like that blah blah, when I get like this I'm not a nice person LOL so I tactically lock myself away until the increased meds take effect.

I doubt I'll ever be back like the good old days, to grizzled and gnarled to get back to that form, besides the free and easy long summer nights feeling is long gone from this hobby, its a grind from start to finish and yes I hear y'all saying new blood will take over and move on, funny thing though, I've not seen any new developers around for a good few years, there just not coming through the ranks like they used too, your definately going to see more third party models shipped by the regular payware houses, Razbam and Iris are two already using AS former producer, there prolific, there generally good, generally more expensive but rarely motivated by a love for the project, for them a poly is a poly and it matters not one jot which form or platform its for. Commercialy thats great, hobby wise its not because once thy've had there fill they will move on and there wont be enough home boys left to fill the void.

For the record, I've no real gripes about FSx, some of the graphics I think are a little 'loud', FPS is mid 40s in the enviroments I use and with settings I find acceptable ( ablout 60% across the board ) and moving animals is but a mere and briefly interesting distraction, my beef is with model compilation, sure there better in some ways and the increased poly count limit is good ( though it can lead to lazyness in problem solving and shape solutions ), but having to use Dos to compile a model in 2008 is a little backward, I assume FSDS users simply have to hit the compile button and its all done for them ?. Not sure how Gmax users compile but as far as I can tell, from Max is the darned Dos command line compiler.

The Hawk looks good as always, anyone who says it isnt should be given a copy of any of the three development programs and told to try and do better, sadly though, your now in payware, which basically strips you of your rights on forums, for every good post you'll get two bad ones, my advice ?, dont read forums :) , or take them seriously, those that do like and respect your work rarely say so publically, but they do appreciate you in larger numbers in silence.

Best

Michael
