 "Oh dear Ed has stirred up a row which I am sure he did not intend to"

I certainly did not intend to. I fully support Rick in whatever he wishes to do, he has given me great pleasure with his previous models which I love and still fly in FS9. I can see he has had great pleasure from modelling in FSX and that is paramount.

Safe to say I would be happy just to see pics of others flying Rick's Hawk in FSX than Rick stop modelling altogether! :o

I have my own reasons for not using FSX and probably never will. As mainly an airliner virtual pilot I am more than happy with FS9. :flying:

I am also very grateful when designers still develop for FS9

If you all get an ounce of the enjoyment I get out of my FS9 I know you are all very happy people. Coolio

My point about models and paints is that a bad/good model/paint is a bad/good model/paint regardless of the platform. :)

Ed

It seems things have got worse. I stupidly though with Rick working for Skysim that it would possibly deflect some of the crap he has to deal with with earlier freeware releases, but from our conversations this definately isn't the case.

It seems that the FS Community at large is now made up of more w@nk3rs than ever. Who is going to develope a commercial model for a sim thats 4 years old.... the economics don't really stand up... especially for a new start business like skysim.

I wish we could go back to the good old days, were people where much more gentlemanly. Nowdays, it seems its I, Me, My.... not much of a comunity spirit that.
Ben

I made a similar point to this in the AS Tornado F-3 thread when I saw some people slating the product "before" it had come out and they had even flown it. By all means review it once you have it, or wait to read the reviews before you decide whether to get the wallet out, but until then give the developers a break. I voiced the concern that developers of payware models might decide it's not worth the hassle and simply stop doing what they are doing - and Rick's comments back that up.

I am sure Rick will correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think any developer minds constructive knowlegdeable criticism while I a project is being developed, but too many people seem keen to bring these projects down with no real basis for doing so.

The FS world needs developers like Rick, AS, Sky Sim, AH etc etc who can devote the time and resource to bring us great products that freeware developers only rarely meet in terms of quality. It would be great shame for the community to destroy (for want of a better word) itself as it were.

Cheers

Gareth

Hi Ed

No mate you didn't stir up anything at all.

I didn't understand what you ment about the paint being better in FS9
I thought you ment there was a limitation with painting for FSX.

Anyway:::::::::::::;

I have got very upset with things lately as it's very hard work to model full FSX as i do not use GMAX or 3DSMAX. (for me it is anyway)

One of my New Beta testers failed to understand what can & cannot be done with the Dinosaur software.
he said i needed Lods and to lower the draw Calls.

This almost made me stop dead but after some thought and another sleepless night i kept going.
He means well sure but has in my view no actual idea how hard it is to actually do this stuff.

neither are easy in FSDS3.5 as you cannot chop & change poly & crossection numbers (you have to remodel in lower polys etc)

I have looked into this draw calls problem and i cannot find a complex model from FSDS that does not have this problem.

I don't see it as a show stopper as the Hawk ran fine on Gordon's Athlon 1800 Demo machine which just required a lower resolution set of textures (only the 2048 x 2048 textures reduced to 1024 x 1024) and on the lower spec maching they looked identical as the screen only had 1024 x 768 resolution.

it flew fine and was smooth as silk & still looked great.

the model is not a perfect Hawk & real in every way as i fail to believe FS9/FSX whatever is a simulator and nothing will ever behave 100% real in this.

All i can say is it should be the best Hawk model for FSX until someone makes a better one.
& i think it will be worth the money as i have spent almost 9 months building it & almost 99.999%% of the testers have loved it so far

I must be a very slow modeller then ?!.

My Gripes are about the huge number of people that hate FSX with no real grounding of their own.
I have no problem if you can't afford to build a PC to run it or you have 100s of expensive addons as both are good reasons to stay FS9.

But i don't like the split as it's false and built on untrue bases.

I would love to Build cross platform models but using FSDS makes that far too time consuming and ends up with compromise on detail & functionality which in my view is pointless.
the IRIS/DSB hawk is a brilliant rendition and in my view makes mine pointless in FS9 (effort wise)

I hope this helps as it's not here than makes me want to stop, it's the E mails that kill it for me so i now block every one i don't like as they arrive. :cpu:

Regards
Rick
