The flaps on the Piper were probably raised post-collision so the student in the left seat could get out. That hand lever can make it difficult to get out, especially for a lady her experience.

That would be an uplifting experience - The Tripacer had the same problem - I once caught my pants leg on the flap handle of a TriPacer which resulted
in a rather spectacular egress from the aeroplane. :o
