indeed the MIGHTY tornado has TAILERONS. the max rated turn is only 7.5g, and even above this, will not stall but simply overstress.

Should the wingsweep be manual or automatic? I have seen people on other forums querying this, and I do not know the answer...for a change

Jeez, I'm afraid to answer any questions sometimes lest I get my head chopped off for stating what I thought to be true (we don't have any Tornados (at least not this type) permanently stationed on my side of the pond) but I'm going to go out on a limb here based on that same question coming up during testing. The consensus was that it is a manual system in the real bird. ;-)

Yes, I'm pretty sure it's manual, perhaps with auto-wingsweep on the F2s?

Somehow, I bet UKMIL knows the answer!

It's a manual wingsweep. It was originally fitted with an auto-sweep but it was disabled very early on in the aircrafts "career". I understand that the AWSMD (Automatic Wing Sweep and Manoevre flap Demand System) is fitted to all aircraft but the switches were simply wired shut. I imagine since then they've disabled them in a more permanent fashion but I'm not really sure.

Let me get this right, I think UK GR models have no automatic system, UK F3's have the auto sweep and flap system but it is disabled, IDS versions produced for the export market have an auto flaps and slats system and export ADV models have the full auto sweep and flap system enabled.

Chris, that's how I understand it having read a thread about it on Pprune a few years back. Not sure what the problem was with the automatic system, considering the F-14 managed to have a perfectly serviceable system throughout it's career it shouldn't have been beyond the wit of man to develop one.

indeed i have answered this to many developers who choose to ignore it as per usual

the GR1 and GR4 never had any auto system.

the F2 had the auto system, but it proved to be very unreliable, and the tolerances at which the movements happened were wide, so the wings would constantly shunt back and forwards randomly which scared a lot of pilots, especially in the landing sequence

so the system was simply inhibited. the Circuit Breakers are pulled and gagged so the system cannot be used.it is still fitted, but never used. the pilots simly select manually between 3 postions, although theoretically they can choose any position between 25 and 67. the SOPs make them use 25, 45 and 67 only

the italian lease models still had the system inhibted, so they never had it either. the Saudis i believe do not use it normally either but have used it at times

the IDS and ECR do not have this feature as it was only fitted to the ADV
