Yes, I think the Phantom would have gone all-over grey by the time it encountered a 160. Nice pic though.

<--- I'm a true Vulcan at heart!

BTW, the later Phantom's with the reworked nose cone to accommodate bigger radar were know as the Vulcan nose ;-)

Nice pix. With the on-going Russian TU95 recurrent visits to British airspace something similar could well be possible in not too distant future...

What could well be possible in the not too distant future, intercepting TU-160's or dusting Phantoms off from retirement? If it's the former then it happened back in January if memory serves, I'm almost certain I saw some stunning pictures of F3's with the TU-160's but I can't find them anywhere now.

Is it my new Specsaver varifocals ( Hugo Boss frames, anti-scratch coating, free pair of prescription sunglasses too, ya know ) ) or is the span of that Phantom tailplane a bit excessive ?

not quite right, the F4-E's were known as 'Vulcan' nose, 'cos of the addition of the Vulcan 20mm cannon, the radar
was actually smaller (and better) than the old (as used in FG1/FGR2 F4-K and F4-M amongst others) AN/AWG -10/-12 due to improvements in electrickery

Agreed, we were churning out 'Barley' grey ones from major o'haul from @ mid-1979, the last ones in camo would've been ones in the trial fleet not already painted in 'Raspberry Ripple' and one or two that had been away to Bae for the 100 and 140FI fatigue life extension modifications and consequently 'missed' their 'slot' in the paintshop

Ben is right 'bout the stabilator too, just a teensy bit too big
