Folks, May I ask a question of those with knowledge than myself.
I have a reasonably powerful AMD3400 but one that wont or hasnt run properly for ages. Blurries, jaggies, stutters etc. I used to create and post a lot of Screenies but its been impossible at this level of graphic performance... so always looklng for ways of enhancing etc.
To my point therefore. I D/l a trial version of Window Washer 6. I tried it ...and presto all my system files remained intact plus the all installed applications eg fs9------ but I have completey lost all my self created Files, Directories, stored zips and pics plus small utility apps of the type you drag onto and operate from the desktop if you follow me.
Asit happens 90% of the files were backed up but...
My question is... is it actually possible to surgically remove all these files and apps and leave everything else completely intact. I'd be interested to hear informed opinion.

Hi Airbee,
The first thing you should always try in FS9 / FSX when you start getting unusally bad performance is rename the FS9.cfg (or fsx.cfg) and allow the sim to create a new one. 9 times out of 10 this works.
From a windows point of view, since windows XP was realeased back in 2003? I run my windows updates weekly, I keep my AV up to date. I don't use file sharing software and a defrag occasionally and I've never had a problem. I've never used a reg or file cleaner as I've never needed to.
From what I understand of your post I'd say the best thing you could now do is back everything up, format your hard disk and start again from sctrach. The reason I say this is that many files and registry keys are linked and unless you have a really good understand of how the windows registry works (and in 11 years in IT I've only met to people who do) you shouldn't touch it. From what you are saying this program has "Tidied up" has removed all of your personal files. Some of these (particularly those which relate to applications or are considered system files / folders) shouldn't be touched. Unless the program produces a log file of every change it makes, no one can have any idea of what it has done to your system.
There are many programs out there that can clean up this and that, but all should be used with caution, and with an understanding of what they are doing. There is no magic bullet as a general rule.
There are many chaps on here who use this and that program to clean up various things, but I know Dan and I share the view that if you follow the basics outlined above you rarely have problems.
Hope that gives you some ideas for the future, but the cfg file is always the first port of call.

Re: Losing Files
Ben tks for replying.
As I understand, you are suggesting the registry was washed, causing the loss of files, Directories and icons. That does seem to make sense of it.
I would do as suggested but the f10 (restore) function appears to have gone missing on my bootup routine. Ay yi yi!
Thks for yr observations - and all the good work you and the others do around here BTW

Re: Losing Files
Hi Iain,
Nope, don't think the washing of the registry has washed the files too. They are separate but linked in certain circumstances. Thinks like My Documents, Pictures etc are actually a type of system folder within your profile and are referrenced in the registry.
This is why registry cleaners, and rouge file cleaners need to be used with caution, as even to the trained eye, it is often a very time consuming piece of work to identify what is referenced where.
Hope thats a bit clearer.
