Nimrod replacement (BBC news item)

Post by mayagrafix »

"The tragic loss of the Nimrod in Afghanistan underlines the need for a replacement system as a priority"...

Why don't they (MoD) just put in an order for Airbus A330 and be done with it? Along with the USAF KC-45A tanker order they can get a nice discount ...

Isn't the US Navy replacing its Orions with a martime patrol version of the Boeing 737 ? Sounds like an option to me. :)

I agree, that awful Nimrod (new generation thingy) Bae are cobbling together is utter rubbish and is very much AEW all over again. The MOD should have known better, I am sure we do not need long range anti sub hunter now, an A320 (or similar) version would have been much better, and we could have had a few more of them.

June 14, 2004: The U.S. Navy awards The Boeing Company a System Development and Demonstration contract worth $3.89 billion for the Multi-mission Maritime Aircraft, which is based on the 737-800. They also have a few cargo versions of the 737-700, calling it the C-40.

Sad to hear about the Orions. It is a great aircraft with a long and successful service history. Based on the Lockheed L-188 Electra, if I remember correctly. Daisuke Yamamoto and the FS KBT team have a P3 Orion available for FS9 which is pretty good.

Trev -
I'm intrigued, what's wrong with it ?

Cost's in the content, not the box.
Apart from the overrun related to recycling odd boxes.

my only problem with useing jets for ASW is that these planes spend a lot of time loitering for long times at low altitdudes.

while In flight refueling would negate some of this, every time a ASW had to break of to fly up to refuel would negate the fact that flying at low atltiude makes it harder to detect.

if they want a replacement. at least in my opinion (for what it is worth :worried: ) they would be better going with a verison of this airbus product.
