As I have said before regarding XP service pack 3, I am waiting for the final release and then I am going to wait a few weeks to see what others experience. My philosophy is I don't have the time or patience to beta test Microsoft products.

Selfish, I suppose, but we are talking about Microsoft here! :@

XPSP3 was never out of BETA, it was put onto RC status, that was all.

OK, I've just downloaded VSP1, hopefully it'll do something to speed Vista up!

Chris, I can assure you it won't make a difference to speed on a stand alone machine (i.e. one that isn't joined to a domain) ;-)

so that's M$'s KB info out the window; they say "faster boot times" and "increase system alertness"

I've yet to receive either, will perform some more tests later!

It does make a massive improvement for Domain attached machines on a business network, but not much difference for a home user. ;-)

Windows XP service pack 3 is being pushed on automatic update now, after all the horror stories I found with Googling I have turned off auto update till the horror stories subside, has anyone allowed the auto update had any problems

Rich..

You can decline XP SP3 (unless you have update set to auto download and install) :)

I have SP3 on a 'new load' XP system (XPSP2 clean install followed by SP3 then FS9, FSX e t c) and the pc itself runs fine. FSX seems totally unfussed but I'm seeing odd things happen in FS9.. so much so I don't use FS9 on that pc :-( I honestly couldn't say if SP3 is the culprit but I'm fed up of seeing g3d.dll.. g2d.dll.. terrain.dll and unknown module errors :dunno: I won't be putting SP3 on my other systems for a while.
