Optimising Vista

Post by hinch »

Hi,

I've just taken delivery of a very sexy Samsung laptop for my sister that's loaded with Vista. It has 2GB of RAM, proper Intel Duel core etc etc but I think it still needs a trim.

What tips does anyone recommend for optimising Vista? I've got as far as getting the switch off button back and turning window transparency off but that's it thus far.

Here's my few tips:

1) IT IS NOT XP.....Get this into your head right now, then you'll be sorted!
2) Turn off UAC, get Avast! Anti-Virus and Spybot S&D (Both free)
3) Defrag ASAP, then do so monthly, at least.
4) Have a mess about with some of the visual options, turn off ones that you don't really need.
5) RTFM Solves everything

User Account Control......stops un-authorised access to files.

Problem if you copy a lot of files between the Program Files or System folders and your users' space. (Comes up with a pop-up each and every time)

Ditto for installations, un-installations, running some programs, etc.

Thanks for that, it was getting annoying. I'll turn it back on for my sister as she's not very computer literate.

Now I've just run a defrag but there no longer appears to be a visual or any indication of how much it has done/to go and whether or not it is actually finished. Just a stupid spinning icon.

I couldn't install messenger either, it just spent 20mins doing nothing then gave me an error.

What a crock of...

Messenger, I advise downloading the WLInstaller off the Live website, saving it to your desktop, then running it as administrator (Right click, choose from the context menu)
