SCAN RESULTS!

The full system scan with the Kaspersky Internet Security suite has finished - a bit earlier than predicted because maybe it got bored. It didn't find anything at all. Not even a tracking cookie :-( At least my other spyware used to find tracking cookies

So what does it prove? Anything you want, really It could prove that my freebie programs were doing an excellent job. It could prove that Kaspersky can't find anything. It could prove that I've been lucky. It could prove that I surf safely. Or it could prove all or none or a combination of those things.....

Anyway, it's a nice easy program to use and it's less hassle than running several programs at once. I think I'll go for the three PC licence as I have a bit of spare cash at the moment. But if I didn't I'd be happy enough to stick with the free progs and surf sensibly.

The only way to prove anything is when a software finds something....leave it there and run another to see if that can find it :think:

Yeah, I agree, that's the point I was trying to make, Garry. One example like that doesn't prove anything on its own but could still be used to support either side of an argument. But as we've said before when Chris has urged us to buy Kaspersky, all the scientific comparisons definitely show that it prevents more infections than any other AV, so if you want the best, there's no argument!

The only real discussion is whether a safe surfer with little spare cash would be safe enough with a free AV. I suppose if you were spending the night in a Nigerian brothel you would want more protection than if you were partying in a nunnery (But then again, if you were short of cash you shouldn't be in a Nigerian brothel unless you were working there )

Not strictly true. Kaspersky has a low user footprint. The largest AV protection (statisticly) is McAfee / Norton / Trend as they have a much larger client base, including some of the worlds largest companies.

I've been using free AVAST for some time and it certainly picks up things on my weekly scan. I get frequent AV definition updates and periodic software updates. I also use free ADAware 2007 spyware cleaner which also finds stuff and has regular updates.

Anyone want to comment on these and knock my confidence in them ....

Again Degsy, really depends on how you surf and use the computer. Avast and AVG are peas in a pod in many respects, both searching for a share of the same market, both with similar weaknesses.

Interestingly Kaspersky originates from a group of developers who used to right viruses! I Guess they are well positioned to write Anti Virus software. ;-)

Hmm..

Using caution in where you surf would seem to have a large influence in what nasties you're liable to pick up. My office pc has AVG and thus far, hasn't sold the crown jewels as it's used for office stuff and either online shopping at a well known supermarket or using bonafide sites..eg, the bank. I also put AVG on my daughters pc so I dread to think what lives on there However.. it will stay there as her pc is isolated from our network ;-)
I use McAfee on both this and my flying pc.. the 'company strength' version, not the home edition and have never had a virus detected. That doesn't mean to say I don't have any but as far as I'm concerned.. ignorance is bliss It's also worth noting that my online use is confined to the major software houses and here so if I DO get anything.. it's likely to be one of you ba***rds that sent it With this in mind.. I also have several email addresses and will hand that out depending on my perception of risk. Very few have my personal address but it generally doesn't matter as I use Mailwasher Pro for all my active accounts. If I don't like the look of anything, it gets bounced from my server
As Ben mentioned, we tend to get a lot of cr@p on the cbfsim team webmail but even that has reduced over the past few weeks so maybe my continued 'bouncing' has finally got through

So.. if you trawl through the worlds seediest sites.. get yourself well protected as you'll need the best you can get. If like me you keep 'out of the shade' then you're less likely to get 'hit' ;-)

I had a virus in fact it has taken me a week to start to get rid of it, AVG was no good for me I thought about Norton, again that was rubbish. I concedded defeat and lay on the floor and waited to die, then my wife found the answer.. Man Flu! I had a good kicking and talking to and now I feel much better!

Ok I use AVG and Spysweeper which is a paid for jobbie. (AVG is free) I respect CB's views as he has been the light at the end of my tunnel a few times with PC problems.. I notice at OCuk which are a great company they do the full monty for £14.09p Chris is their spyware catcher better than spysweeper??

Hi Tony,

One of my friends using Kaspersky Internet Security (the full works) and hasn't had any issues as far as I'm aware. He wanted something good as he does all of his banking etc online.
What it's like compared to Spysweeper..... don't know really but I would trust Kaspersky. Other than that, theres always Norton ;-)
