It is 40 years ago today that Vulcan XM604 of IXSqn crashed just outside Cottesmore village killing 4 crew members.

Many many thanks for that link mate.......I served in the RAF for 9 years and can admit to being teary eyed reading that thread...... 
I lost 2 close friends whilst in the air force.....both having jollies (joyrides) on RAF A/C.....The 1st was on a Chinook that crashed in the Falklands and the second on a Herc at Blair Atholl in Scotland......
To be honest , to see people from all walks of life helping the daughter of a lost airman , to find out more about her father was touching to the extreme.....
I am going to tip my glass for all serving soldiers , sailors and airmen past and present tonight as that has made me think of my past and brought some very old and fond memories to the surface.....

Still in mate (12 years) and actually based at Cottesmore (for the 2nd time). This coupled with the fact that I grew up near Scampton just as the Vulcans were leaving kind of made this story special to me.

Just spent an hour going through the thread at PPrune
It restores ones faith in mankind I think watching how many pitched in to help the two ladies.
And the shot of the Tonka crossing the site in remeberance sort of brings a tear to ones eye.

Many thanks for posting that Stafflad, extremely sad to have lost lives in that accident. Had read the account of that crash in a book by Andrew Brookes titled 'Crash' and was amazed at Peter Taits' escape when he ejected as the aircraft was only about 300 - 400ft up in a steep nosedown attitude with a speed of approximately 160kts.
His co-pilot Mike Gillette fractured his left upper arm on landing.
It is only a pity that the Governments' of the day did not allow the addition of rear ejector seats but due to costs and of the likelyhood that the Vulcan would not be in service for very long.......!! :-(

Fascinating that this all came together because of the internet, and great that Sarah met those other people involved, which must make her feel more at ease.
Only thing is, if you look at where the crash site is pointed to on google earth, it is some distance away from the farm. But then watch the news report and you'll see that it actually only just missed a farm building....phew.
