I did prefix my comment about encryption "not a problem for the home user".

And my preference for using WInzip is that all my zip files are discrete files. Hence XP doesn't know what is in them and will not produce a million hits if I ask it to search for "readme.txt".

That suits me - other people will prefer the way XP operates. It is all down to choice, eg FS9 or FSX ;-)

I agree entirely matey. It's not like me (as you well know) to advocate anything 'default' from M$ as being 'defacto' but there are cases where 'if it aint broke.. don't fix it' rings true.. FOR THE AVERAGE HOME USER ;-) Compressed Files does work and it's native so doesn't require any folding. Is it the best... well, no ;-) WinRAR.. as Garry mentioned, is better as far as compression is concerned and handles a variety of file formats. Downside is that it's payware although if 'the average' user is like me.. the demo will last a lifetime and it's fully functional too ;-) Winzip users shouldn't worry either (if they're paid up members) as Winzip offered a lifetime guarantee which I (I now remember) extended to XP but removed as written earlier ;-)

I still can't see where this 'delay' comes from though. I suppose it has a lot to do with what you compress though the same values that apply to most 'compression' progs apply to the M$ version.. eg, somethings compress and others won't Guess I'm just lucky but that tag is one I'd never apply to my personal demeanour

Advice is.. WinXP has a 'winzip-like' compression built-in so don't buy one unless you need something above and beyond what the default can offer. I know that Rick uses MediaPlayer as his default prog for music. I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole. Who's right and who's wrong ;-)
