The registration is most likely under the horizontal stab (i.e. elevators). In the US, aircraft which wear a "historic" scheme are allowed to place the registration and other odd bits in black or white underneath the horizontal stab in 3-inch high letters to maintain the paint scheme. It is however missing the "Experimental" letters under the canopy that should be there, so it's not 100% legal.

Also, are you sure that's not a Strikemaster next to the Gnat? It looks to have hardpoints on it.
