Bump Mapping

Post by Tweek »

Dunno if this should go in the repaints section, but seeing as it's not about a specific repaint...

1. Before I start, is it possible to add the extra bells and whistles that FSX brings (bump mapping, specular mapping, etc) to an FS9 model, or does it have to be exported as a true FSX model? I'd love to give PF's Canberra a work over, but if it's not possible, then so be it.

2. Even if it's not possible, I'd still like to experiment on some FSX models. That said, I haven't found any particularly comprehensive guides or tutorials on how to actually do it. I've found one vague guide, but my efforts proved futile. I'm sure there's plenty around that I've totally missed, but any chance somebody could point me towards one or two?

Cheers.

As far as I know FS9 can not support bump mapping

These FS.X things are what make FS.X what it is

I don't think there has ever been or could ever be a case where the new bells and whistles of any Sim have been backwarda compatible.

Adding new bells to an old model wold make the old model forward compatible, and normally a thing that can't be done....

Reg. guidelines, I'm afraid the only good guideline I know of is the SDK that follows the sim...hence the FSX-SDK.

Rick may be your friend in this matter?

I think you misunderstood.

I'm using FSX, so bump mapping is very much possible, but I was wondering if you could use old FS9 models, and add the bump mapping to those, within FSX.

Sorry I miss read

I thought you meant in FS 9 as the subject of trying to update FS.9 models into FS.X has been flogged to death ever since FS.X came out.

I don't know if all is settled now.

What I do know is there is a lot of confusion still and shifting goalposts....Certainly causing me some stress.

But what you are asking would have to me done at modelling level in any case as bump mapping is something set up in the model materials etc.

So it's something for the model author.

As far as I know, with the danger of being wrong, the simple answer is: "Yes"

Hi,

As Garry says, I'm sure that it has to be at model level. The bump map is like a texture so has to be modeled to use it. Once the bump texture is modelled then you can play around and change the bump texture to suit.

It can be done but you would need the source files as I understand it :)

Yes, you can do it if you have the source files for the model......
