Burning videos onto DVD's

Post by marcus »

Does anybody have any experience with burning dvd's? my dad has recently been trying to burn some dvd's of videos he's made from his video camera, we've done all the editing and extracted the file from the camera onto the pc but whenever we try to burn the files onto the dvd, Nero doesn't reconise the file we're trying to burn. when I go into the burn dvd section and click on add, I'm just presented with a blank box, We've used windows movie maker to do the editing, but I'm wondering if we should be using some other package for this.
I've burnt audio files without any problems but this is proving to be a real pain in the a**e :brick:

Hello mate..

I use Nero6 to burn DVD's and don't have any problems. What format is the file produced by Movie Maker??

Generally when I've made DVDs I've edited the footage and produced an avi file, I use Adobe Premier but I have used Windows Movie Maker and it produces avi as well, however you do have to tell it to.

When you choose 'Save to My Computer' and the 'Save Movie Wizard' dialogue box comes up you'll come to a page with 'Movie Setting' at the top (it's after you've chosen a name for the file and where to save it) Select 'Other Settings' and from the pull down menu choose DV-AVI (PAL).

It should now save a scarily big file somewhere on your computer, the software I use and I'm sure Nero will recognise that and convert it into the right format for DVD (which can take a while) and burn it. Plus you can probably add a menu and stuff like that which is all good fun.

Any other questions I was Visit DVD making Monkey on my last ship so I know far more than I ever wanted to about this sort of thing.

Dave, the format is wmv, I'm starting to think that a plug in or something might be missing from Nero as my dad said that a message popped up when he was using it saying that a plug in has expired and requires visiting nero's web site to download something for £50? :@

Marcus, try exporting from Movie Maker as an AVI first as this is more standard for making videos (it's what digital camcorders use) and Nero may well support it without a plug in. The problem with WMV files is that the format keeps getting updated with each new version of Windows Media Player, so unless Nero get's updated it may not accept the new format.

Hi Marcus,

Have to agree with Skippy on this one, use an AVi file, most DVD authoring packages read this to create the .VOB files that allow it to be read by a set top DVD player.
