Policing on the cheap!!

As with all public sector workers, we(the police, ambulance service, fire service) are here to provide a service to the public. And lets be honest we are all paying for this service through our community charge etc.

My worry here is the quality of service that we are paying for is underpinned by the quality of the individuals that are employed. Pay peanuts and you get primates.
I have no doubt that this move by Nottinghamshire Police is a money saving exercise, which will have a direct impact on the quality of service the air support unit provides, and therefore a direct impact on us, the members of the public.

I, like Tony am an Air Observer with over 18 years service as a police officer. I dont mean to be disrespectful to CSO's or other police staff, but the UK Police do a serious job and I find myself asking what type of individual would apply for this job? Are you really going to get a que of retired Observers or military crewmen in Nottingham to earn 20k pa to work shifts? I think not.

Maybe I'm gettin a little long in the tooth? I certainly know where my X on the next ballot paper I see is NOT going!!

Always nice to see another bobby here....and Hi from London......Wanna join the Met....? :D

Monkeys are going to become a new fixture for us all mate and i am sure....no positive , that we cannot stand in the way....We Paramedics are now being put on FRU's as lone responders.....Will lives suffer...? Who knows as we are all proud of our jobs and will do our best for the patients...but will we be backed up if something goes wrong....? No is the answer and the more cost cutting that goes on the more demoralised we all become....even the fire service is learning CPR and how to use defibs "aka" just how the Americans have been doing it for years....

Wheres it all going.....?

Cheapstreet is my opinion.....

Thanks for posting some common sense words Matt, I think folk believe they can jump into the helicopter and do the job... I guess watching copper choppers etc on the tele makes it look so easy! lets face it you do not see motorway police instead you get "highway Agency patrols" on the beat there are no bobbies just chepo cops in the guise of CSBO's go into a police station and expect a civvie front office clerk... wont be long before we never see a copper at all!!
My X will be going to a party that offers law and order along with proper retribution to the offenders and giving the taxpayers the service they pay for not the sh*tty shambles they provide at present run by morons who are nothing more than double glazzing salesmen whio think the world revolves around them!!

Not being involved in any of the public services, these comments do rather confirm my opinionated view of them.

As Tony puts it:
run by morons who are nothing more than double glazzing salesmen whio think the world revolves around them
All the money poured into schools, health service, etc just seems to get absorbed by more management, more committees all with their guaranteed pensions. Let the money pass down to the people on the ground and see what happens! People proud of their jobs and being recognised in their pay packets.

Rant over - keep it up chaps. Never know when I might need you

Hi Matt and as Tony said, welcome to the Forum.

I have to agree with both Tonys' comments regarding civilianising Police Helicopter Support and before you say anything....yes...I had shown interest in my reply but even though I monitor the city centre and have direct link to Police Control it is completely different to that of being in a position of having to direct Mobiles in a high speed pursuit or even an armed incident. (Only read the full job description after having posted my reply).

To be honest I do not think for one moment they will recruit some-one with no previous experience of policing, more likely to be an Officer who has recently retired from the force (hopefully).

Like everywhere in the country the main problem lies with Central Government and the way funding is allocated.

Take for instance Nottinghamshire, it has very nearly the same population as Lincolnshire but with Lincolnshire being rural, the force here is stretched to the limit having to cover the county whereas Nottinghamshire is relatively a smaller area to police but, as far as the Police Budget goes, the Government do not take this into account, it is done on (I believe) a population count so therefore the force here is underfunded by something like seven million pounds.

Nigel.

But Nigel does that extra budget in Notts go to getting people on the ground or more administration?
