Hi there - without wanting to boost another forum (when this one is here! :goodman:) but the FreeFlightDesign one mentioned above does have a 'Working XML' code section. You can also look at the default modeldef.xml to try and reverse engineer what you require. Unfortunately what you require and want, isn't always what Microsoft are giving you.
I'm really new this coding lark - but I think, like anything else, you'll soon get a feel for the way it works (hopefully)....
It never fails to impress me, what talented designers you/we have access to on the internet - most of whom, would be more than happy to help when we stuck. HELP I gave up on the SDK long ago...
No transparent layers - the textured glass for the dials aint been sorted yet (& no glass on dials in piccies above)
Regards
Mike

Roger that, as it took me about two days to write a simple bit of code to get a control surface to act as a flap or a spoiler depending on which was more deployed the free flight code section should be a God send!
I've found the FSX SDK a lot better than the FS9 one, but it's still very Microsoft, reminds me of maths text books that'd give you one example and then expect you to apply that to all kinds of problems that appeared to bear no relation to it.
With regards to the dials I'm wondering if the performance hit of a transparent layer would be worth it if texturing looks that good.
