Fleet Air Arm Museum, Yeovilton. (56k warning!)

Post by VEGAS »

Hi all,

been visiting the family down in Somerset over the last few days. The missus and my sister went shopping so I decided to visit the Fleet Air Arm Museum at Yeovilton for the first time and found it an immaculate & fascinating collection. Their Aircraft carrier deck display is brilliant. :)

Unfortunately for a non-photographer like myself I found it very hard to take decent snaps as the layout inside all of the exhibition halls was very dark. So I can only apologise for some of the snaps being of poor quality. However here are some of the better ones. It was a pleasure walking around G-BSST! Happy new Year!!

Hi Dave,

the experience 'aboard' was very unique. Never seen a set up like it in any museum. Shame it was quite dark or my pictures would have come out better. The base itself was very quiet. I waited around for any air traffic movements but to no avail. :-(

Kodak Z740
Isn't that similar to Joe's (airboatr)?

So Joe, how would you have made the camera perform so that Eddie can go back tomorrow

Eddie..

Most of the shore bases are on leave at the moment mate. Of course, there are members of the armed forces still working the world over but this time of year is particularly quiet here in Blighty ;-)

I thought that all our serviceable operational assets are now deployed overseas, including those slightly damaged or in need of maintenance. The only operational acft to be seen returning to the UK will be those that must return for humanitarian reasons eg bringing home those in need of medical care and those who have reached the 'tour expired' stage. I would imagine that all routine supplies (POL, ammo, food etc) will now be sent by ship and then by in theatre resources. Hence quiet circuits.

Hi Hobby,

Of course, there are certainly elements of all those things in play but you will find that after the festive season is over and leave parties are back.. things will liven up again. I wonder how much low flying has been going on in 'the loop' this week? At a rough guess, I'd say none. Regardless of what goes on abroad, things tend to stay as normal as is possible here ;-)

The first week of my summer holiday down in Cornwall, the skies were full of military activity. On the Wed of that week, Culdrose held it's open day (they always hold it midweek) and friday, the base went on summer leave. I didn't see a single military aircraft the second week of the holiday :-(

Some folk will be working but that has to be. The armed forces don't completely stop over holiday periods (though it often seems like it if you're one of the ones working and you need to get something done) :o
