Anti-Aliasing

As some of you may know, I lost my PC recently and had to bite the bullet and invest in a new machine which so far has worked perfectly and for the price I am well pleased.

However, the card that this machine came pre-installed with is the GeForce 8500GT 512mb.....so far so good...FR's are no longer a problem...

However....what does seem to be a problem is that in FS2004 the Anti-Alias appears not to work.. :roll: ...no matter how I fiddle and tweak the settings from 0-16x AA....nothing seems to improve the jaggies which to be fair are not that bad but it would be nice to improve things a bit more.....

Am I alone with this problem and if not what is the setting/workaround here.....any help much appreciated.

Have you the latest drivers, I know that you can get the 169.21 betas from the Nvidia website. Also I use anti aliasing set to application controlled and have it switched on in FS. I did have a problem with jaggies a while back until I realised the number two monitor in FS was not set to AA which gave an odd effect, so if you have two monitors make sure the settings in FS9/Display/Hardware are identical.

Hi Tony,

The Drivers installed with this card are the Nvidia 163.71 so I was rather hoping that would not be a problem but as you mention the 169 Beta is out, I will have a look on their site and give them a go in the morning.....Unless of course anyone else has already tried them and can let me know if they do cure the problem... :roll:

I only use the one monitor so that rules out the other theory.

Please try turning AA OFF in the Forceware but leave AF at x16. Now go back into the forceware and set the AA from OFF to "Application Controlled". Finally start FS9 and goto Options > Settings > Display...Hardware Tab and TICK the Anti-aliasing box...You should now have AA working.

Thanks for the tip Peter .....tried that but sadly no joy... :-(

I was excited to see the good frame rates etc but very disappointed with this lack of AA on Flightsim. After trawling the net, I am seeing a good few others have this problem in both FS2004 and FSX apparently.....not sounding good at the moment....seems that it may be a 'known' problem with this particular card and these two M$ applications maybe.....

Will have a stab at the Beta driver perhaps.....though I am losing confidence in success at this stage..

Hi Brian,

It may be worth a try putting the settings as Peter suggests and then rebuilding your fs9.cfg. ename the old one fs9.old and then start FS2004..

I thank you all for your help in this AA business......I tried everything suggested to no avail then by accident I have found the answer....

I have always had the habit of flying in 'Windowed' mode....something I have just got used to I suppose..Anyway, in fiddling with the settings and maybe in sheer desperation, I somehow found myself in 'Full screen' mode....and sure enough the AA works perfectly... :kissu:

I am sure this must be the way Nvidia intended the card to run with this Sim due to various M$ issues... and perhaps may explain why it does not 'appear' to work....but it works good enough for me...!!!

I'd presumed you were in fullscreen mode!! :roll: Of course.. should you feel the need to go FSXing, for some reason, FSX seems to prefer windowed mode which is totally alien to me Glad you're out of jaggyland anyway ;-)

So now we have found out the 'niggle' with the 8500GT cards......'Windowed' mode is a no no..... So as Airboatr has said...FSX would probably not be a good move for me either ....not for the life of this Graphic Card anyway....... ;-)

Can't remember why I always used 'Windowed' mode anyway......just force of habit from way back when I found better FR in FS2002 I think......never mind.

How are you getting on with yours Tony?.......are you experiencing the same thing with your new purchase yesterday?...... :roll:
