Re: FSX/MS Ranting thread.
I only fly FSX now. I would remove FS9, but I need it for dev testing. The Mossie will be the last aircraft I develop for FS9, anything new will be FSX+.

Ben
understanding your eyes are sore from reading the same ol same ol
on the subject of FSX vs FS9, it is a necessary evil .....
What would the sim look like if no one did complain.
but then again .......... the ATC hasn't changed a bit
and that was one of the biggest grips.. so ........
go figure
It’s apparent we will only get what they dish out ....and that’s it.
Unfinished underdeveloped software that only
reaches maturity after third party developers finish the job with add-ons
and users tweaking the config file into a pretzel.
Sim after sim after sim
right , …….we need to be mature and just realize that MS isn’t up to the job first time around .
It time to realize we have to be men and women and finish the job .
(of course I understand the hardware issues so the basic release config file needs to be set up for the weakest of computers)

Re: FSX/MS Ranting thread.
Thanks very much guys. Now I have an FSX action plan at last. The trial is still available at Microsoft as is SP1, so I'll download it and see if I can update it as well and see what I think. But I think Ben's right. If I'm only going to fly the fab four I might as well sit tight in FS9 for a bit.
I don't want to buy a new desktop as I rarely have spare time at home lately. I spend much of my spare time 150 miles away keeping my elderly father company - hence the laptop so I can fly whilst I'm there and watch DVDs on the train and stuff. I'm going there tomorrow for a couple of days so I'll download tonight and try it out later. As he doesn't have internet, I won't be able to have a good rant until I get back so you'll just have to wait.

Re: FSX/MS Ranting thread.
your point was not missed

Re: FSX/MS Ranting thread.
And I think that is part of the reason for the division of loyalty between FS9 and FSX. The partial (?) lack of compatability means that people are not sure whether to jump to the new version (and lose some of what they had before) or stick with what they have (and not have access to the new stuff).I only fly FSX now. I would remove FS9, but I need it for dev testing. The Mossie will be the last aircraft I develop for FS9, anything new will be FSX+.
Whether it looks better/worse is an aside.
A half-way house that just causes upset.
Obviously FSX could not just start again with a totally incompatible product (maybe it should have, but too much business risk there) but partial compatibility leaves us wondering.
For now my money stays in my pocket (same as with Vista). Not broke, just tight

Re: FSX/MS Ranting thread.
I done it! I downloaded the demo, but it wouldn't let me install SP1 without the full program. But amazingly, my laptop had no trouble at all with it - even without SP1. I set all the sliders to High except the aircraft - which I set to Ultra High
I put anti aliasing on and optimistically set the frame rates to unlimited. I set the weather theme to fair and over the sea I was getting 50-60 fps, over the land about 35 and around the airport 20-25. The only things that pulled the FPS down to 15 was the thunderstorm and flying close to the cruise ship, otherwise it was smooth flying.
Considering Ben's comments on the limitations of laptop hard drives, I was pretty impressed with the performance from an £800 machine. I guess the sim would run even better with SP1 and SP2/Acceleration.
But did I like FSX? Yes, I did. It has a more 3 dimensional feel to it in the same way that Vista does compared to XP. Despite what I expected, I quite liked the road traffic and ships (boats?), the movement makes it seem more alive. And I liked the trees and the water effects. It ran very smoothly for me, too.
So will I buy it? Well, no, not at the moment - but only because my favourite aircraft are not compatible. But there will obviously be a time when there are enough classic jetliners that are compatible with FSX to make it worth my while.
I hope this little experiment has been a help to some others as well as to me. I now know exactly where I stand in relation to FS9 and FSX and what my hardware can do. I guess there is ammunition there for both sides of the argument, but I still stand by my original comment that I can't understand why it matters so much. They are both out there and they are both brilliant. Fly one or fly the other or fly both......stay cool

Re: FSX/MS Ranting thread.
Hi Ian,
I'm really glad you like it, and I'm impressed with the performance of your laptop. I really didn't think you'd enjoy it much, but its nice to see that Rick / DG and myself aren't the only ones who think its not bad.
SP1 will improve performance and SP2 will sort out most of the glass problems with DM's models, and the comet is fine.
I would still suspect that if you loaded any VFR style scenery on you might get a performance hit though.
Thanks for the feedback.

Re: FSX/MS Ranting thread.
Excellent result and worth all the arm-twisting
It's worth noting Ian that some folk actually saw things fall apart a little in the full product but this was corrected by SP1. Others saw an improvement in the full product but had things go wrong after implementing SP1. Also.. not everyone has found SP2 a barrel of laughs either but that's the way with software isn't it.. you're never gonna please all of the people all of the time ;-)
Despite my reluctance to 'go over'.. 'X' doesn't run too badly on my pc (old hat single core rubbish). A gallon of us did a Dams Raid using MP in FSX a few months ago and as I was the one with a useable navigation aid (FSC8 - which I hate!), I led the raid. Brilliant fun, no probs with MP, voice comes built-in so no worry about having to get different software and the attrition was similar to the real thing with Ben and I being the only two aircraft to land back at Scampton some 5+hours after takeoff. Doing this sort of thing in FS9 would have been a burden by comparison
As Ben suggested, the major stumbling block appears to be with 'Photoreal' scenery (the likes of Horizon's GenX and JF's VFR series). For some it works a treat and for others it's a nightmare with the anoying thing being there seems to be no apparent reason why this is so. OK.. if you have a pc capable of running NATO (eg.. something like Bens).. the chances of it failing are lessened but there are folk out there with near identical spec dual-core and below systems where it runs fine and on others it's rubbish. How long's a piece of string??
Anyway.. the prospects for you Ian look good so sit tight and hope for a lottery win

all depends Dave
I'm afraid the answer to that question isn't how much string you have to measure,
.......but how much your willing to spend to measure it.
