Gloster Gauntlet

Post by Roger »

From Chris Herring's new website. $6.00 via Paypal gets you a Gauntlet with 6 paint schemes 2d and 3d 'pit and clickable switches in the vc. The shine is added by me because I like a little sparkle :)

Hmm..

I don't like to decry anything for the sake of it or without seeing it in the flesh but I'd noticed that the shots on the website and the shot above almost look like different models. I suppose that $6 is a meagre enough asking price to take a chance ;-)

Tks for the HU Roger ;-)

Dave, a touch better than £25 squid for the base :o from Alphasim! Seriously I haven't downloaded this one so cannot comment on quality but Alphasim (despite addressing a much needed olde worlde (fairly olde worlde) segment have prices that are a touch high these days (lots more on the debate over at Avsim and at Alpha's forum). I don't want to start another Alpha slagging session - because in many respects they don't deserve it - but one has to think extremely carefully before forking over the very hard earned (having to start work at 04:30 for next x number of weeks, which means getting up at 02:30 - so very hard earned indeed |-) ) when it costs over £30 for a model and it's variants - at that price it has to be bl**dy good!

Regards,
Chris

Chris..

I thought for one moment that Patchsim had knocked out a Gauntlet  You're right of course..$6 isn't £25 so at that price it can afford to be a bit iffy.. that is unless there's a decent freeware one available. I have a Gauntlet kicking around here somewhere but can't remember who made it

You're thinking of Frank Elton's Fs2002 model I think Dave. At under £3.00 I don't think you can go wrong if the gauntlet is an aircraft you want. I added "semi-gloss" shine from the Shine utility because I think it adds perspective to a totally matt model. I also added the Bristol Mercury sound pack from "Lawdog" in the SOH library which I liked in "Thicko's" Glad. I''ll post a link to more screenshots in my post at The Old Hangar.

As someone who is battling just to paint someone else's efforts, I'm loath to poke with too sharp a stick - but Frank's model is more accurate, and is also $6 cheaper. I'm struggling to see the benefit that this model offers, the fuselage looks to have more of a Grumman than a Gloster look to me. I did like his DH-16 though.

That said, any developer with an interest in biplanes is to be encouraged, perhaps a Patchsim style patch could straighten out the fuselage that little bit?
