VFR Scenery

Post by RobDob »

Hello Gents

I have an intel duo-core 6700 with 2 gig RAM and 640mb Nvidia 8800 GTS card. I seem to have trouble with the VFR scenery as it takes ages to load when in-game, it stays blurry for some time even when flying a slow heli for example. Can any of you fine people offer some words of wisdom as to how best get this scenery loading quicker please? Computers are far from my strong point!!!

Many thanks and best regards

Rob

Hi Folks

Rob -
What version of FS, and SP level please ?

re: VFR scenery
Which of the 3 UK product are you refering to ?
- Visualflight VFR photoscenery (FS/2002/2004)
- Horizon GenerationX
- Justflight VFR Photoscenery

The old Visualflight scenery will always be slow loading
due to the way it's created, (uncompiled photo-tiles).

Are all areas active ?
Is it an 'all-in-one' folder installation ?
What is your LOD radius set at ? (set it to low).

FSX with SP2 should further reduce the blurries for FSX style photoscenery.

Ah...it's the old visualflight stuff, originally for FS8, which may be the reason! I may need to buy the newer stuff then? Would that be recommended as a start?

That sounds VERY reasonable!.

Any scenery NOT made specially for FSX, is more or less due to have impact on frame-rates.

Ideally a genuine FSX-compiled scenery is preferred, second best is a FS9-converted...

Earlier than that must be considered as a no-no.... Not that it doesn't work, but as you have experienced, it may have a severe impact on frame-rates.

So VFR scenery for FS9 is a waste of time then? :dunno: I should get dreaded FSX and buy FSX photo-scenery?

Hi Rob..

No matey.. far from it. I run with the original 2002/2004 VFRPhotoscenery and VFRTerrain full time and wouldn't run without it. It's not perfect but as anyone who's bought FSX and GenX knows, that's not perfect either. While it's of a higher definition (as is FSX), many people have had terrible trouble with it (me included) and there seems to be very little idea as to why some folk can run it while others can't.

Textures in the original VFRPhoto DO naff off from time to time but don't think this is restricted to 'it' and FS9. Exactly the same happens with GenX in FSX. The much talked about SP2 is supposed to be addressing this issue (and many others) so it should.. eventually.. run better than VFRPhoto/Terrain does in FS9. Time will tell. In the meantime SP2 isn't here so you run the same risks taking the plunge with FSX and GenX as the next man. Just in case you're wondering if the JUSTFlight VFR Photo for FSX runs any better.. it doesn't. In fact, it runs worse than GenX if anything (and thats saying something) ;-)

No what I meant was, using the correct version of the software developed for the same version of the SIM.

Don't use fs8 software on fs9
Don't use fs9 software on fsx
etc.
etc.

Best thing is
fs9-sw on FS9
FSX-sw on FSX

second best is:
fs8-sw converted on FS9
fs9-sw converted on FSX

etc.

I don't say that it won't work, I just say that you can't be expecting wonders from a piece of SW developed for an older version of the SIM....

I'll dig myself into a hole now.....

VFRPhoto (the real one from Getmapping) is a bit of an odd sod in that although being of 2002 heritage, it compliments VFRTerrain (2004 software) which was not only designed to run with it but which contains alternate textures :) I agree Dan that it shouldn't be pushed any further and it isn't designed to be.. hence why the original developers made GenX. I get a feeling that Rob is on FS9 anyway and not on FSX as was presumed (or maybe.. just maybe.. I got it wrong.. again)
