On the subject of vortices and other emanations from aircraft.....
In my FS9, at twilight or in darkness some aircraft appear to be blowing bubbles out their tailpipes. Anyone know what caused that and how to remedy it?

Re: FSX Vortices
Considering other third party effects are fine, I'm pretty sure it's down to the effect file itself. ;-)basys wrote:Tweek -
I'm not seeing the issue you describe here on my lowly PC,
though I didn't look closely at that aspect in previous versions.
Any effect can also disappear intermittently,
or appear planar/angular
if your pc is being overstressed,
i.e. changing viewpoint excessively.
That's not FSX's fault,
that's your sliders.![]()
The angular aspect of it is most noticeable in very fast, very sharp turns. And it's certainly not my PC struggling, as it's even like that when I'm in tower view with a plain blue sky...
This should illustrate my point a little better:
(Microsoft default - outer, IRIS - inner)

As you can see, the IRIS effect is much smoother.

Re: FSX Vortices
I noticed this today in FSX in a Hawk.. most untidy  My sliders are lower than a snakes belly in a wheel-rut and spec is higher than Basys so I dunno what to suggest. That said, I don't have SP2

Hi Folks
Tweek -
From your screenie I now see what you were refering to,
that's not the issue I was describing.
Please check your aircraft.cfg
specifically look at their relative positions with wings retracted.
Is it possible the outer effect in your screenie
is actually the 3rd party Iris one ?
The inner effect pair looks like what I see as wingtip vortices in FSX.
I'll have a look & double check later.

I've never felt so frustrated....... died so frequently/spectacularly/or needlessly....... yet had so much fun, in a long time.

Simply put - no.basys wrote:Is it possible the outer effect in your screenie

I edited the config myself to add in the IRIS effects, further in from the wingtips (at no specific point) so I could compare the two.
I'm pretty sure it's down to the effect itself, not to do with the performance of my computer. Hence, going back to the original point, I want to replace it with a more realistic alternative!

Re: FSX Vortices
Just to throw in my 2p, I've got the nasty jerky effects on the wingtips in FSX like that as well no matter what I do with my sliders. I had assumed it was just a lower quality default MS effect and was going to look into replacing it with a better one at a later date (I assume it is low quality because MS have to try and make it work on the lowest common denominator type of PC so corners have to be chopped somewhere, the default aircraft's texture mapping is another example of this).

Re: FSX Vortices
Sorry for bumping an absolutely ancient thread but the dreaded jagged FSX vortices are back! I had to replace my effects folder with a copy of the default from the FSX disk and now they're horrendous. They weren't a problem before so I assume one of the many addons that are available replaces the FSX default vortices with something very smooth and nice looking. The question is.... which one? Does anyone have any ideas?
