DC-3 revamp anyone?

Post by RAF_Quantum »

Hi,

.............just pretend it's a deHavilland :-#

There is a DC-3 available at AVSIM called the 'Awesome Foursome'. This a model rework of the default DC-3 for FSX. The source files of the default DC-3 are included in the FSX SDK - not on disc but in the updated download. Now, I presume (I haven't looked) that the source file have been tweaked etc and then new models compiled using the FSX SDK tool to make the model. I've been wondering if the source file can be tweaked etc and then the FS9 SDK be used to re-compile the model for FS9 ? It would be nice to at least get the texture mapping altered to get rid of the mirror images but would also open up opportunities to make different models - a proper cargo door would be nice. I'm assuming that when the model is being made in GMAX it can be output in the different FS9/FSX flavours? Do the parts have to be renamed for each version ?

n.b. The creators of the Awesome Foursome have tried contacting ACES to get approval and never got any feedback. The fact that the source code is in the SDK I assume has made it 'open source' so as long as credit for the original model files is made to ACES then a modifed model can be created without repercussions?

Rgds

There is a lot of discussion about this model at NZFF (http://www.nzff.org), I believe the team is 'based' there.

I'd love to see the model in FS9, I do like wheel chocks...

I'm pretty sure it would be okay to distribute the model, I can't think of a reason why not except of course if you tried charging for it.

I was wondering the exact same thing when I read your post to Allan about all the texture terrors on this model.....simple solution if the FS.X supplied model can be compiled into after a re map

I'm glad you posted this as it can now be given a good airing...........I didn't post this myself in case it gave the impression I wanted to do it :o :worried:

It may mean a bit of work but would be well worth it :)

I reckon that a great deal of us spend our spare time 're-using' bits of the original prog (in this case Flightsim) so I honestly can't see a problem for the Awesome Foursome team. Granted, if it's source code.. M$ could get a bit twitchy (if that's what it is) but if it's part of an M$ download and/or using the M$ SDK's, where's the harm :) It's probably no good to anyone who doesn't have the software to run it (eg, Flightsim) and if no dosh is being charged.. fair play to the team. I wish em all the best with it

One wonders how closely Microsoft monitors this. Just look at how many CFS2 Stock models have been reuploaded for FS9 with airfile tweaks and texture repaints....

For whoever has 3DSMAx, they can easily retweak the DC3. OTherwise, for gmax use, someone has to convert it and port it to gmax.... (or FSDS, but that would have to be done in "chunks" ... I don't think the converters can handle that large a model at one time..)

Anything that expands FS is good for Microsoft.

A few spectacular free revamps of stock aircraft could well grab the interest of a visiting mate and cause him to go by a copy.

I can't see it ever doing them any harm as long as it remains free

Somebody modified the stock fs9 DC-3 to turn it into a Soviet Li-2 a year or so ago. It now has Soviet instruments in the vc. You can find it at Avsim.ru.

Best wishes
