Hiya Ben :)

This is the major problem mate.. the uncertainty over whether it'll work or not. Buying these 'Mega Packs' that also include the sim itself is a good idea (especially for us poor lot here in Blighty) but it can be an expensive mistake if the software doesn't run. Horizon are completely blaming M$ which isn't fair and is of little use to those with the prob. Much expectation was placed on SP1 and this sorted many out.. Rick included who was one of those that had the demo and it worked fine then bought the full pack and it stuttered.. but not all. All it did was moved the stutter :o

I don't know what the price of FSX and one pack would come to but it depends on how much disposable you have as to the best way to go with it. If you buy the lot all in one go and find it doesn't work, you still have FSX and 3 sets of scenery that you can either keep for that rainy day pc upgrade (though this in itself is no guarantee of success) or resell on ebay or buy FSX and one area. If it works ok, it'll work ok with the other sets so you can either buy brand new at a greater overall cost or keep your eyes open to take advantage of some poor unfortunate who's selling it on because it doesn't work. I doubt very much whether anyone would want to sell parts 2 and 3 leaving them with part 1 but you never know.

There is just too much uncertainty with the Horizon software and there shouldn't be

Hi Dave,

totally agree with what you've said... I just consider myself one of the lucky ones. When you consider the 3 parts plus FSX itself at full retail would be in excess of £100 its a hell of a gamble. :)

As a finale to the Horizon/JF conundrum.. Lee finally got FSX and his 3 JFVFR packs and loaded em up yesterday. The end result is that it runs worse (if that is possible and having seen it with my own eyes.. it is!!) than the Horizon GenX :o Theres an interesting note in one of the readme's that states there is an inherant problem with 'Photo Scenery' in FSX (good of them to let you know after you've bought it!) and users experiencing a problem should visit the M$ site and download a phototexture file. Neither of us can find it so was it included in SP1??

Here you go chaps... this was includd with SP1, so if your running SP1 (Which you should be) you shouldn't need it.....

Rgr that Ben. I had a feeling that was the case. Lee is using SP1 as I gave him the copy I downloaded ;-)

The default terrain mesh in FSX is MUCH better than in FS9. But the GenX mesh looks much better to me, although probably because I do a lot of low stuff in the Lake District. If you mainly do airliners, there won't be much benefit.

Also, the GenX mesh fits the GenX textures much better than the default mesh. So most of the anomalies seen with the default mesh with GenX are not there.

I don't know how the mesh is developed, but I would imagine it's an average value between each point. Since the data is generated by radar, I wouldn't expect trees to show anyway. Presumably they edit built-up areas to eliminate spikes from tall buildings, although probably the most disappointing aspect for me is the gullies across motorways. Take a look at Barton Bridge and you'll see what I mean!

Uh-Oh... :$ i just bought the Horizon GenX bundle deal ( Vol I, II and III ) Looks like i had better read this thread first....

Didn't know about the difference between the Horizon and JF offerings. I have all Horizon volumes for FS9 and enjoyed them very much i.e. trust them to do a good job for the FSX version too.

I was extremely enchanted by the demo i tried just now, didn't even realize i had been looking at the JS version demo when i hit the order button to buy the Horizon bundle deal... :doho: ( they sell the JS version too ) It happend to be the comparison between the photoreal scenery of the JF demo and what now looked like a rather rediculous rendition of the British countryside by the default FSX scenery ( maybe emphasized by the autumn season textures ) that urged me to instantly go for the Horizon photoreal sceneries a second time around.

Ah,well, the damage is done. I expect the DVD's to arrive tomorrow. I am a positive thinker. I'll let you know if it helped..

Cheers,
Jan

Hi Jan :)

The Horizon GenX looks much better than the JF VFR Photo IMHO. Fingers crossed you're one of the lucky ones not troubled by the stutters ;-)

Looks like i'm one of the lucky ones, Dave, i have checked Vol I for about an hour now, still have to see my first stutter. It's wonderful !

Actually i was quite content with the default FSX scenery ( some places more than others obviously ) but now i'm spoiled again, back at square one.

The Spit's camo works quite well too, éh ?..

What i missed most with the earlier FS9 Horizon VFR scenery was the Autogen, this time not anymore. On the highways i can actually see each individual car, which color it has, can't determine the reg. number though but we can't have it all, can we. I am using the 1.2 meter high res version, the details are amazing. I have flown average speed of 150/160 IAS and only see low to high res texture change in the far distance. That was quite
something else with the FS9 version as well. ( running on my old system, mind you)

Very happy with this scenery, it sure is as brilliant as the wonderful Megascenery Ohahu.

Btw, can anyone recognise this ? :

Jan

Hi Jan...

the only place I can think of ( and its a pure guess) is the SAS training area in Herefordshire. I seem to remember a mate of mine (who lives in Hereford) telling me they have an airframe on a hill someahere. (he couldn't identify it. )
