Nvidia 7600GT AGP

Post by ajb »

My poor old Radeon 9600XT melted last week so I took the opportunity to upgrade to the Nvidia 7600GT. It's the AGP version as finances won't allow for full system upgrades yet. It took an age to get anti-aliasing working but after installing an older driver, then the latest from Nvidia (Forceware 162.18) things seem OK and performance is dazzling (well compared with the 9600XT). There are 2 problems that are causing concern and I wonder if any of the hardware gurus could cast any light. The first is that when hitting ALT for the menu bar, and whilst ever in the menus, there is a lot of "flashing" on the display. The other problem is that the aircraft, like the 748, display as if the anti-aliasing was switched off. To support the 9600XT I converted the textures to DXT3 format but I did not expect to have to do the same with the 7600GT. Are there some other settings on the card which need adjusting?

My system is a Pentium 3.0Ghz HT processor running on an Asus P4P800S-X motherboard, 1Gb RAM, op system XP, sim FS2004.

Any ideas?

Andy

Hi Andy,

Your FS9 should whizz very nicely on that setup. Are you using Nvidia software to control the AA or letting flightsim do it?? General rule of thumb for FS9 is to set hardware preferences yourself rather than let Fsim try and do it (eg.. don't have application controlled ticked). AA should be much tighter on the Nvidia card and the picture slightly sharper. The only real advantage of converting the textures to DXT3 would be an increase in speed as far as I can see.

You shouldn't be seeing flickers at all.. this is definately a driver issue. I see a pink surround on the select aircraft box when I select an aircraft and use Alt+enter to see the rotating model. It's either that or see nothing  Hopefully, one of the 7srs users will be able to come up with something for you ;-)

I have an Nvidia 7800GT

Flashing when changing screen.flickering and jaggies are a constant problem

I tried a suggested setting the other day and the image was much smoother but I lost the spinning plane in FS and it was difficult to see what I was choosing.

I have to swithch anti alias.

It will only work application controlled then after a while that fails and it will only work on the card.

After a while that fails and it's back to working on aplication only.

Generally I don't like the card.

Hi Andy,

The only thing I can add to that is to make sure you clean out old drivers...just doing an uninstall back to VGA before installing a different card and drivers often leaves bits which can conflict.

I've never had a Radeon so I don't know what cleaning tools are out there..

Apologies if I'm teaching granny to suck eggs... ;-) (What on earth does that mean anyway......  )

The ATI 'get rid of ATI bits' software is generally very good Derek so if that's been used, he should be free of any conflicting bits. That is.. if it's been used. Always a good thing to check though and it may have been missed ;-)

Hi Guys!

Thanks for all of your help and insight. I used "Nasty File Remover" (NFR.exe by Rudi Kohn) to get rid of the ATI bits as they do cause problems, and also removed the few remaining "sticky" files by foul means. I think that I have got a clean Nvidia driver setup now and the sim does really fly along for the first time ever so I'll put up with the flashing menus. Still can't figure out why the 32 bit textures are grainy though. Maybe it'll work itself out as experience is gained. Cheers everyone!

I may be wrong but I think that driver you have installed is for Vista OS and you say your OS is XP :)

Hi Peter,

I've just double checked and the Vista driver for the card is 162.22. Mine is 162.18 which I confirmed is correct for XP. Thanks for the thought though. Two minor problems aside, it's the first time in 7 years of flightsim that I can fly in real weather, ie. cloud and rain just like we get up here in the Hebrides, without stuttering all over the skies. I'm enjoying it again :)

Hi Andy. The same problem occurs on the 7600GS which I use.I just live with it or disable antialiasing.Otherwise I am happy with it because it runs FS9 nicely.ATB EricT :)

Thanks for that info Andy...I've just downloaded and installed it...BTW you should check that you have the latest Microsoft update to DirectX 9.0c...It is dated June of this year and contains some fixes.
