This just in from Alphasim.................

Post by Trev Clark »

New addition to the Scenery section - RAF Leuchars ! The famous RAF base is depicted in its present-day state, featuring busy AI operations - Tornado F.3's, C-130J's and Beechjet 400A's are active around at the base and in the air, all are very high quality AI and fully animated.
For FSX and FS2004 only. Filesize : 11.65MB. Price approx. $28USD, £14, 20.50EUR, 34.50 AUD.
From the screenshots it is more like Garry Summons early stuff, than Flightzone scenery. I would have liked more in the way of the domestic areas too, but if you fly FSX, it is better than the default by some margin! Just the place for the soon to be released Tonka!

I think I'll continue using Mr Anderson's old Leuchars, as this doesn't look to me any great improvement. The Ukmil team put out an AI package that has livened it up very nicely, so will do until Steve (finally) gets around to releasing his FS9/FSX scenery rebuilds.

Hi Trev,

Do you know if the AI stuff can be removed. I prefer to use my own. I know that some of the old sceneries had statics built into the building BGL which meant if you removed the static, you lost some of the buildings aswell. Any idea how this one fairs in that area?

Hi Ben, I no nothing other than the HU, I am afraid. I would think (unless FSX is different) it is just a simple file that you can remove. Try asking at the Alpha forum, or wait for young Dan to get up (time zones ;-) ), he may be able to help.

Not gone down yet- still working ;)

The AI is true AI so can be removed like.. AI. I'm not up on my.. AI.. so I don't know how it's done.

In short, the AI is AI, not bgl'erised.

Beechjet 400A's
I didn't know the RAF had those? :S Do you not mean HS125 / Dominie aircraft (Hawker 800's I think they are called now)

This Leuchars is not worth £14!

I cant see how Alphasim can give this such a high cost for one single airfield of which ive seen far superior freeware. Compare it to other Leuchars around its not any improvment worthy of Alphasims price on it.

Compare it aswell to freeware RAF bases around, of course not Leuchars, but look at the quality of UKMILs Coningsby/all of MAIWs work, inc. Lakenheath/Coningsby, Keith Steadmans Cranwell 2007 alswell, shall i go on....all these wipe the floor compared to Alphasims Leuchars...

...so you can probably guess i will not be purchasing it.

Alphasim prices are going up and the quality isnt going on the same level...they have gone into the UK2000 realms...release it then patch it to death...

No, go on Jason, tell us what you really think!

You have a very valid point about the recent proliferation of decent freeware sceneries; in fact, for Coningsby, we are spoilt for choice! Actually I think there is a freeware Leuchars available over at the Outhouse, search under "Cees Donker" and you will find all sorts of little gems.

Alphasim have, and will continue to, produce plenty of quality products - I suspect, from posts in their forums over the past month or so, that we Brit fanatics could be in for some real treats over the coming months. Unfortunately it doesn't look as though this particular release meets those criteria. :dunno:

I take it that's a 'Thumbs Down' then Jason

If you've bought it.. let's hope you're having less problems with it than I am with the fuel system on the Heinkel He111  Alphasim-Lightning has commented to one poor chap 'and yes.. we DO have beta testers'. Unfortunately, this requires more than looking at something and saying 'That looks alright.. NEXT!' It does beg the question.. how can something be beta tested and released that only burns fuel off the RH fuel tank (from default aircraft selection) and requires the fuel tank selectors to be switched to AUX before this little procedure will stop (and it doesn't always stop) :dunno:

I could go on but I won't as I'm still currently a 'customer beta tester' and I'd like the problems fixed and so 99.9% of my comment is being made over there.. not over here ;-)
