Yep, if you want to use the VC, or look around a lot, then TIR is for you. If you want to replicate the godlike genius of the System Manager coding his computers and see the ground only on short finals, then TIR probably isn't.

One final point to mention is that TIR does have a hotkey selection so you can switch it on and off at will and they also do a clip in place of the hat that clips onto headphones.

Well at long last after months and months of umming and arring, last night I've finally ordered myself a TrackIR4 Pro from RC Simulations.

Now just got to wait for the postman and then hopefully I wont be seen for days.....will let you know how I get on next week.

As I 'fly' VFR 100% of the time in General Aviation types and warbirds, I suppose this is THE add-on to have. Only time will tell....

Best wishes,

Martin

Got mine this morning. Had a couple of flights so far (one in the JP and one in the Trident). Seems to work well, although it can get confusing at times. That's probably my inexperience with it more than anything though.

I had an issue with being unable to look far to the left, which I discovered was the camera seeing the window behind me! With the door shut, no problems.

One thing that DOES surprise me is that it can be physically quite hard to look for the Trident autopilot for example, and keep still enough to press anything. Especially when nursing a neck/shoulder strain! :crying:

So, first impressions:

Hi James,

Yes, that's one thing I noticed too. You find a switch, grab the mouse and just as you're about to click.. your head moves slightly and the switch has moved  As Real As It Gets.. NOT!. I dread to think what it's like in FSX with you going back in the seat as you accelerate or move forward as you decelerate

In the end, you'll probably find a handful of aircraft that it works really well with, some that it works ok with and a few more that it's a pain in the butt so you won't tend to use VC's with those or leave the TrIR4 off

I've had that 'wonderful' feature turned off since the first demo!

I have noticed how difficult TrackIR is when the framerate stutters though. Very confusing! Probably not a good time to push for the hardware upgrade though. To be fair, it's only a problem with AI traffic turned on, and I usually prefer to have the airspace to myself!

Thanks to TrackIR, I noticed an A320 about 5 miles away from my Trident today. I suspect he was trying to capture the ILS into 9L at EGLL (I was on 120 degrees, he must have been on 60). I managed to stay in front by keeping 250 knots until the glideslope capture. He got told to GA just as I touched down. FSX ATC? You can keep it thanks! :dunno:

Hi,

There's a hotkey to stop movement so that you can make adjustments. Once you've made the adjustments hit the hotkey again and all returns to 'normal'. I find it good to edit the movements to leave a 'dead band' where slight head movements have no effect on movement in the sim. Also the 'centre view' hotkey is handy to adjust for an instrument approach - tilt your head back slightly, centre view, then when your head returns to it's normal position you have a more heads down look at the panel. Takes a bit of getting used to the tricks but is worth persevering with it. I have several profiles depending what I'm flying. If in left han seat I have the pan rate to the right slightly less aggressive than panning left out the window. It gives a smoother scan of the panels etc.

Rgds

James.. where the heck do you turn it off mate. I've looked until I'm dizzy and can't find it

EDIT.. found it! :welldone:
Look in your FSX.cfg file for the section [DynamicHeadMovement] and change all the values there to 0 (zero). I remmed out the originals ( // ) just in case but it appears to have worked a treat. No more sick bag

Glad you found it Dave. Undoubtably one of the most pointless features of FSX!

John, some good tips in there. I'll be reassigning some of the buttons on my stick today!

Cheers,

James

Well it arrived on Friday (very good service from RC Simulations) and as a result didnt go to bed until early Saturday morning.

Very very pleased with the product, cant see going back to panning with a joystick again. Runs nice and smoothly (cept have to cut back AI a little as begins to stutter), but on the whole very pleased.

A few months ago, I was thinking of packing the whole sim thing in, but this has now given me a new interest. Now need to upgrade PC to run FS2004 more smoothly (not interested in FSX at all, as am quite content with all that I have for the older version).

Best wishes to all,

Martin
