FSX Landing/Taxi lights are rubbish

Post by VEGAS »

Hi all,

another reason I am so frequently using FS9 these days is the quality of the lights in FSX. Plain and simply they are cr@p. Not even bright. In fact they resemble a 99p torch bought from my local market stall, although that would be ever so slightly brighter.

When I go to external view and switch from off to on, it resembles a change in texture colour rather than an actual pulse of light that we get in FS9.
Anyone got any ideas to improve this? I'm getting a little frustrated with FSX these days and its only GenX and Multiplayer thats keeping me interested in it.

Well mate.. it's only MP that has stirred my interest in it. GenX runs much better with FSX windowed on my system but still not to the same degree of smoothness as FS9 (and before anyone pipes in.. that is with only ONE element loaded, not dual res and night textures!). You do get machine gun fire with certain aircraft when you turn the lights on though Eddie and thats GOTTA be a plus!

And what is the Classic or British connection to yet another complaint about how bad FSX is?

Geez guys, enough already, we get the idea that some people don't like FSX with a passion, some are ambivalent (like me), and some like it. This is so much worse than the FS2000 complaints that it's really getting old.

Admin/Mods, censure me if you like, but if you're going to complain about the content on the Non-British Classics section, can we at least be consistent and lock down or move inapproprate threads on this one?

Steady on Chris. I do like FSX in a lot of ways, especially the GenX and multiplayer as stated. But I find as time goes on little things crop up that I find irritating and feel the need to express my views to a place I know others will listen and hopefully provide interesting and positive feedback so I can improve or learn how to rectify the matter. Thats it. :dunno:

I don't know while you feed the need to have a moan about it. We all have seen the threads about how good or bad FSX is and to be honest in a way your right and perhaps we may be covering old ground but like I said my aim was to see if anyone has got any tips to make the lighting effects any better.

So if you have'nt got anything positive or helpful to say then save your energy. :-#

I had assumed this was a compatibility bug with add-on aircraft (I'm mainly in the JP at the moment), but I've just tried the default 737 and that's the same... It's not a biggie for me. I prefer it to the 'turn everything white' approach of FS9, but it does look poor from outside.

FWIW, I think topics like this belong here. I'm sure I'm not alone in rarely using other flight sim forums, and might prefer the simple non-argumentative advice given here! There is a lot of knowledge amongst the members here, and FS9 and FSX are the main platforms in use, so why not make the most of it?

Eddie

Are there any add on alternates to FS.X lights?

I found the FS.9 spotlight very poor and had to replace it to be able to see ahead.

Perhaps that's why it has been altered for FS.X.

Does it work if you put the FS9 Spotlight into FS.X?......if that's the one you're talking about.

Not a familiar area for me but I would think that something like that that you prefer in one sim could be swapped to see if it works.......keeping a back up of course. :worried:

Just a thought.

Hi Garry,

I tried that and it did'nt seem to work or make any difference but then again perhaps I did'nt do it right. :dunno:

As far as I know there are no addon's or bolt ons that can assist. I have seen a xenon lights upgrade on AVSIM but after trying that it made not one bit of difference.

I think the FS9 lights seem to be so much brighter than FSX and I can't figure out why seeing as the new sim should be so much better especially now the patch has been released but hey ho, such is life.

Whether viewed from the flightdeck or outside as a 'spotter', the lights barely resemble anything bright and its rather poor TBH.

I might have another look at the cfg and have a play around with it.

Hi Eddie

Certainly worth a fiddle as you may well get a fix you are happy with.

This is really the problems with FS.X....FS.9 is well supported with add ons and experienced fixes where as FS.X is still pretty much out of the box.

The lights in FS9 were very poor on my system

From the inside they stopped forward viz and from the outside they were large bright 'cones' pointing downwards more like the Dambusters than Bealine 262.

I'm now fixed courtesy of a replacement spotlight.

Truth is different cards/drivers and other variable have different effect on different machines.

Add to that the variation of personal preference and it is clear that nothing will suit all.......and of course FS.X choice is limited...for now.

So I guess fiddling is the best option.
