Should the Anthem go.......poll

Post by Nigel H-J »

Going to take a deeep breath and go for a poll.

From the recent thread regarding 'God Save the Queen' played on a Renault engine, do you think that we should now ditch the Anthem for something more inspiring and patriotic?

'Land of Hope and Glory' for me. Much more stirring than the dreary current one.

There has been another alternative suggested.

I always thought the national anthem a little odd as it is about the monarch and authority over the people.

Rule Britannia or Land of Hope and Glory are more suitable as they was more about the pride of the country and people in relationship to the world.

I think most civilised countries anthem is about the glory of their country rather than the rule of their leader.

As a card carrying member of the 'Yanks With No Right To Vote In This Poll' party, I voted for Rule Britannia.

Brian

You may be from over the pond but you are, as is any-one else from overseas, more than welcome to put a tick in the box.

It would be very interesting to see how many none British (excluding Scots Welsh etc......!!) people view our present Anthem and whether or not it requires livening up from its' present form!!

Not forgetting of course the few ex-pats we have here!!

Regards Nigel.

Always be an England would be nice for the national anthem of England but not so much for the Great Britain/United Kingdom.

The national anthem of the United Kingdom should be God Save the Queen, however I am a firm Believer that their should be an English National Anthem as I don't believe England should use God Save the Queen when in competition with other areas of the UK

Scotland (Flower of Scotland)
Wales (Land 0f my Fathers)
Northern Ireland (I haven't a clue and I'm from there  )
England??? I personally like land of hope and glory.

If we are talking about a National Anthem in terms of the Union then "Jerusalem" is out as it refers specifically to England.
Obviously, "There'll Always Be An England" fails for the same reason.
"Rule Britannia" is specifically about ruling the waves, which given the parlous state of the Navy due to government cutbacks, is hardly appropriate.
"Land of Hope and Glory" is certainly the most rousing alternative and quite capable of bringing a tear to the eye of any Brit. Mind you Elgar, whilst he didn't write the words was quite upset when the music was used in a jingoistic way.

On balance, and with all due respect to the composer, I'd go for "Land of Hope and Glory" with "God Save the Queen" as the Royal Anthem on appropriate occassions.
