Charlie Fox progress

Post by Garry Russell »

Picture taken a few days ago show that the hard work involved in bringing this Britannia back to her former glory is starting to show.

The forward section has now received basic British Eagle livery on the port side.

Great picture Garry, it never ceases to amaze me how far people will go to preserve such aircraft for many generations to come.

They all deserve recognition for their time and efforts in preserving classic aircraft such as this for every-one to enjoy rather than allowing them to become victims of the scrap merchants' torch.
I used to be an optimist but with age I am now a grumpy old pessimist.

Lovely. Is she or will she be a complete a/c then? I thought it was just the fuselage but I can see wings there.. :dunno:

Hi Eddie

She's pretty much all there..certainly all the externals etc are there.

Just a case of putting it back together.

Probably easier to paint it on the ground as once she is on her legs they would need scaffolding and ladders.

When finished she should look like she's on the stand ready to go

One of the most graceful propliners, nice to see it 're-born.'

They're re-painting the Cosford one into RAF livery, but it never served the RAF, so why, when we already have XM496 in those colours? :dunno: It did need a re-paint, but surely should have stayed in BOAC scheme, in which it served.

Hi Chris

There was speculation....but is that for sure?

The Comet yes but................

It's the wrong type of Britannia :worried:

The other way to look at it is that Cosford is the RAF museum (yes I know there should be a national civvy collection too), as a result their collecting policy dictates that there isn't a place for non-RAF stuff, our Dove has just gone to the north east air museum as it doesn't fit with our collecting policy and is taking up much needed space.
At the end of the day I'd rather see it preserved in RAF colours than not at all.

Well it needs repainting such is the inaccuracy of the current BOAC livery......but there is a place for it in an RAF Museum in a civilian airline livery as a representative of all the trooping flights so vitally carried out over the years by civilian airlines on behalf of the military.

Hi Garry, hopefully it will look a bit like this one, we flew to Singapore via Istanbull and Bombay this is a postcard I have
it was part of the handouts at that time, that was a air trooping flight in 1964 or 5
